What happens when long-distance lovers who've only ever met online actually get to meet in person?

That's the premise of Channel 4's five-part reality series, The Nevermets, which has been following five couples separated not only by vast distances but, sometimes, differing cultures.

The six-part Channel 4 series has introduced us to people like British catering assistant Sarah, 38, who travelled to the Phillipines to meet a 27 year old Filipino virtual assistant, called Jgoy. There were tears when Sarah had to travel home, with both admitting they had deep feelings for each other.

Also on the show is 17 year old A-level student Jay, aged just 15 when he met now-26 year old Veena in a Game Of Thrones chatroom, but who travelled around 5,000 miles to meet her at home in India.

And charity founder Dumebi, 25, from London and luxury car rental broker Mazi, 27 who lives in Dubai. After he was repeatedly late for their meetings, she decided to give him the push, with viewers delighted she'd finally dumped him.

On last week's show, viewers were also introduced to Glaswegian social media manager Leah, 24, and project manager Chad, 48, who lives in North Dakota, USA.

Leah and Chad met on a dating site called Seeking, known for its high wealth clientele and for connecting older men and younger women. Leah made the first move and after a few messages were exchanged, they began video calling.

But viewers were fuming as Leah travelled to meet Chad – despite admitting she'd met someone else back home – with many saying the same thing about their relationship.

On Mumsnet, one person said: "The Chad and Leah one is just ridiculous. Two months and he’s talking about moving his child to the U.K.? He needs to get a grip. I think she’s also stringing him along so she can be on TV - she’s not remotely serious about it when she’s met someone else."

Another added: "Oh god I don't know how I feel about the young Scottish girl and the older American guy..."

While a third said: "The clip of them smooching was horrible."

In episode five, viewers will get to see what happens with Warrington-based Matt, 38, and Maria, 28, from the Phillipines, as well as Leah and Chad, with series narrator Dawn French promising in a preview clip: "Leah's feelings run hot... and cold," as Leah admits, "I don't know what I want."

The Nevermets continues on Friday, 14 June at 10pm on Channel 4
