Netflix's Maid has released its first trailer ahead of its release on October 1st.

The limited series stars real-life mother-daughter-duo Margaret Qualley and Andie MacDowell as on-screen mother-daughter.

Inspired by the New York Times best-selling memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, the life-affirming drama follows the story of Alex (Leftovers star Qualley), a single mother who turns to housecleaning to - barely - make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter, Maddy.

Netflix says: "Seen through the emotional yet humorous lens of a desperate but determined woman, this series is a raw and inspiring exploration of a mother's resilience."

Here's everything else we know about the series...

The plot

The eight-part drama is based on the memoir by Stephanie Land, in which she shares her story and other real stories of workers in the US. For a period of her life, she depended on food stamps and coupons to eat, and recalls the programs from the government that provided her basic housing. Her book has been described as "an inspiring tribute to the determination, resilience, strength, and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit".

In the drama, Margaret Qualley plays a single mother who escapes an abusive relationship and attempts to build a more stable life for her daughter. Andie McDowell plays her on-screen mother Paula, a self-proclaimed artist with an endless rotation of boyfriends. While her infectious personality makes her the life of every party, she takes great pains to hide her battle with psychological demons.

The cast

Margaret Qualley takes the lead as Alex and Andie McDowell plays her mother Paula. The cast also includes Anika Noni Rose, BJ Harrison, A Teacher's Nick Robinson, Xavier de Guzman, Aimee Carrero, and Toby Levins.
