Netflix confirm Firefly Lane season 2 is happening

Katherine Heigl's new Netflix show Firefly Lane has been grabbing attention this week, thanks to its reflection of female friendships and bingeworthy plot.

The story follows two best friends Sully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke), who have known each other for four decades. Despite their lives going different directions, they've always stayed close.

But the series finishes on a major cliffhanger (spoilers incoming!) which has left many fans wondering whether a second season is inevitable. Here's what we know about the possibility of a Firefly Lane 2, from release date to storylines.

Is Firefly Lane season 2 definitely happening?

It certainly is! Netflix, Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke revealed the happy news in a Zoom announcement on 26th May 2021.

"How long do I have to wait for season 2 of Firefly Lane?" Katherine read from a fan question, before turning to Sarah and announcing the news. "I don’t know if you’re getting this as much as I am, but anywhere I go, 'Is there gonna be a season 2?'…You know, I’m just like, ‘Guys… yes!'" Katherine shared.

Sarah exclaimed, "There’s gonna be a season 2! We don’t have all the answers yet, but trust us, it is going to be worth the wait."

Creator Maggie Friedman also told Entertainment Weekly there was loads of material for season two. "I think there are a lot more stories to tell, if we’re lucky enough to have a season two, of those girls going through high school and what that’s like," she commented.

“They’re only in eighth grade when we leave them. They’ll have a lot of good teen years and fun seventies, growing up times with the great music and the fashions and all of the cultural changes,” she continued. I think it’s just really interesting. I’d love to keep telling us that those stories and those actors are so good, so of course, I would want to keep seeing them."

The first season, which is based on the novel of the same name by Kristin Hannah, didn't reach the end of the book's plot, while there's also a follow up, Fly Away.

What will happen in Firefly Lane season 2?

*Spoilers*

Considering the major cliffhanger at the end of season one, we can assume (or hope at least) that we might find out what happened between Tully and Kate. The first season ends with Kate's father's funeral, which Tully is banned from attending.

As Tully begs for forgiveness, fans are left wondering what mysterious betrayal she has committed that leads Kate to swear their friendship is over forever. Could Tully have slept (again) with Johnny Ryan, Kate’s long-term love interest and ex-husband?

The Firefly Lane novel also reveals a major character death is coming, which presumably will feature centre stage. "There's plenty to go, just from the first novel," Ben Lawson, who plays Kate's husband Johnny Ryan, told OprahMag. "There's also a sequel. Hopefully audiences delve in and we can continue."

Who will star in Firefly Lane season 2?

The whole series relies on Kate and Tully, so we assume Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, as well as the childhood versions Roan Curtis and Ali Skovbye, will return to play the best friends.

The series also features Ben Lawson as Kate's husband Johnny, Yael Yurman as their daughter, and Beau Garrett as Tully's mom, Cloud. Max (Jon-Michael Ecker) could also return in season 2, though we don't. yet know if his relationship with Tully is over.

When will Firefly Lane season 2 be released?

So far, no news on a release date - we're not sure if production has even started yet. What we do know, though, is Firefly Lane was filmed from September 2019 through January 2020 in Burnaby, British Columbia, and was released in February 2021.

On that timeline, the soonest we can expect to see Firefly Lane season 2 is mid-2022. Eek.
