Netflix spy thriller Black Doves to return for second series

Politician’s wife, mother and professional spy Helen Webb will be returning to pass on more secrets to the organisation she works for in a second series of Netflix thriller series Black Doves, it has been announced. Following the success of the first series, which dropped on the streaming service in early December, a second set of episodes has been commissioned and the two main stars, Keira Knightley, who plays Helen, and Ben Whishaw, who plays champagne drinking assassin Sam, are both confirmed to return.

To announce the new series, Netflix has released a video in which Keira and Ben meet up together in a bar decked out with Christmas decorations. She greets him with “Merry Christmas,” and he says, “Hello darling.” She then raises her glass and says: “Here’s to Black Doves season one,” to which Ben replies: “Don’t forget season two, darling.”

They both then open little red parcels, each of which contains a bullet that they drop into their champagne flutes. The clip ends with the words: “Black Doves season 2 is coming, darlings.”

The first season followed Keira’s character Helen as she learned her former lover had been murdered. Her handler, Reed (Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire) called in assassin Sam to help Helen find the killer and work out how the murder was linked to the political secrets Helen had gleaned from her blissfully unaware politician husband, Wallace (Andrew Buchan).

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum earlier this year, Keira spoke about how much fun it was to work alongside Ben Whishaw on the series. “We really get on, which was just thrilling,” she said. “It was really lovely to play off our natural chemistry and build that relationship that way.

“I’m hoping in Season 2 we [get] more scenes together. That was our big thing. We were like, 'But we only ever get to meet up when we’re chatting in the car or over the phone, so can you please put us together a bit more?'"

She also revealed what she would like to see happen in the second series, which is expected to start filming next year. “I am fascinated by [Helen and Wallace’s] marriage,” she said. “Now, you have the fact that Wallace knows that an affair has happened or suspects that an affair has happened. I think he’s possibly going to be questioning Helen in a way that he’s never questioned her before. She’s going to be on display if he does become prime minister. She’s definitely on display and in danger in a way that she hasn’t been before.”
