Good news for Virgin River fans who have devoured season 3 and are hungry for more – the heartwarming drama will be returning for a fourth and a fifth season, Netflix has confirmed.

Jinny Howe, Netflix's VP of original series, recently told USA Today: '[With] everything that's been going on in the world, people more and more [are] looking for, not just that comfort, but also that feeling of hope and that feeling of community.

'All of that really came together in a way that was really organic, and I think this was more of a proof point that this is a really vital area of programming for us.'

The series follows Alexandra Breckenridge's Mel Monroe as she embarks on a new chapter of her life in the remote town of Virgin River.

Virgin River's official Instagram page featured a clip of Martin Henderson (who plays Jack) getting down on one knee to propose a season 4 to co-star Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel), before she in turn suggests a season 5.

Highlights of season 3 included a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane, a new romance and a humungous cliffhanger in the finale.

Here's everything we know so far about Virgin River season 4...

Virgin River season 4: The plot

Season 3 ended on an emotional cliffhanger – Jack Henderson proposed to Mel, before the drama concluded with the revelation that Mel is pregnant – but she doesn't know if the baby is Jack's or her late husband Mark's (Daniel Gillies).

Show-runner Sue Tenney told TV Line that viewers 'will find out' the baby's paternity at the end of season 4.

On the twist that Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) will try to win full custody of the twins, Tenney added that fans can expect legal drama to come too.

'I have sympathy for Charmaine,' she said. 'I don't condone her actions. They're a little squirrelly. But she's not evil. She's just hurt. Everything that Charmaine does is out of hurt. She's always working from a place of hurt.'

Meanwhile, Hope was still in hospital after enduring a brain injury, with creator Tenney telling EW: 'To us, it's the recovery and what she's dealing with — a traumatic brain injury. In a hospital and going through recovery, that's not really where our show lives. But we're very committed to what the truth of something is, so we'll go to the edge of what's the best recovery for this. We always stick with the parameters, medically, but also we know at this point what we like to do, which are complicated emotionally drama-based stories.'

Virgin River season 4: The cast

Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson will be returning to the cast as Mel and Jack, while Lauren Hammersley will be reprising her role as Charmaine. We expect Annette O'Toole back as Hope and Tim Matheson as Doc to return for season 4 too.

Virgin River season 4: The release date

Season 4 has only just been announced, and filming is yet to get underway. So we will probably have to wait until 2022 for the next instalment, and 2023 before we get season 5.
