The New Museum Will be the Place to Visit This Year. Here's Why
If you've run out of museums to visit, here's some good news: the New Museum just announced that they're working on a massive, 60,000 square-foot expansion that's set to unveil in the fall of 2025. This will mark a nearly doubling of available gallery space, which has in the past hosted such artists as Mire Black, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, and Judy Chicago.
In collaboration with OMA Studios and Cooper Robertson, the new build will feature an inaugural exhibit called New Humans: Memories of the Future, and will include the works of more than 150 artists. “The New Museum has always been a future-facing museum—not a place for preserving and recording history, but a place where history is made,” said Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum in a statement. “We are thrilled to be working with Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas on OMA’s first public building in New York City, ushering in a new era of possibilities for the New Museum as a vital civic resource for New Yorkers and the global arts community.”
The new OMA building will be named after Toby Devan Lewis, a former New Museum trustee who has in the past donated more than $30 million to keep the space running. In addition to adding more space for artists, the expansion will also create a more dynamic design, including a new restaurant, more accessibility options, and improved workshop areas for seminars and hands-on teaching.
