The baker boy hat on the runway
Forget the beret for one moment. The newsboy cap has bobbed up atop the heads of many a street styler this season. And they’ve even got the catwalk stamp of approval, as models at Dior stepped out in denim baker boy headgear aplenty for SS18. [Photo: Getty]

The baker boy hat on the streets
You can’t scroll for five minutes through your Instagram feed without spotting a baker boy cap or two. And we have a hunch that it’s down to Bella Hadid’s penchant for highly covetable hats. [Photo: @lucywilliams02]

Pink and red on the runway
Valentino gave us a glimpse of the future when the brand sent models down the runway in clashing millennial pink and crimson red. And it hasn’t slowed down since. The 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death reintroduced us to her inimitable wardrobe and nobody knew how to colour-block quite like her. [Photo: Getty]

And the colour trend translated well on the streets, as fashion month saw journalists and influencers alike decked in pink and red. Regardless of the season, it’s a sartorial trick that works wonders. Bring on 2018. [Photo: @hannamw]

The slogan tee on the runway
For her Dior debut, Maria Grazia Chiuri sent models down the runway bearing feminist slogans emblazoned across their chests. Ever since, we’ve been coveting statement t-shirts aplenty. Don’t even get us started on the Gucci logo tee… [Photo: Getty]

The slogan tee on the streets
Lucy Williams took to Instagram earlier this year to make us green with envy, as she graced the streets in her must-have Gucci tee. We’re still saving up for one. Fingers crossed they’re in fashion next season, too… [Photo: @lucywilliams02]

The ladylike shoe on the runway
One thing we definitely did not anticipate this year was the return of the kitten heel. Once regarded a fashion faux pas, the ladylike shoe won over our hearts (albeit reluctantly) when Maria Grazia Chiuri brought them back for her Dior debut. And they’re here to stay, as Prada sent models down the runway in SS18-approved miniature heels. [Photo: Getty]

The ladylike shoe on the streets
Pernille Teisbaek never fails to make us lust over every single item in her wardrobe (or on her Instagram feed). And she demonstrated just how we’ll be wearing the trend this season in some Balenciaga knife numbers a few months back. [Photo: @pernilleteisbaek]

Supersized earrings on the runway
It all started when the likes of JW Anderson, Delpozo and Loewe sent models down the runway in mismatched jewels the sized of our palms. And this season, the trend is still going strong with many of us desperate to recreate the one earring trend. It’s harder than it looks… [Photo: Getty]

Supersized earrings on the streets
Look to the likes of blogger Janka Polliani for inspiration on how to wear the supersized trend this season. Because they’re here to stay, as Teatum Jones, Fyodor Golan and Paula Knorr sent models down the runway for SS18 in one mighty earring. [Photo: @polliani]

Athleisure sported on the runway
The likes of Balenciaga and Versace reminded us that athleisure is not going anywhere, as models sported luxe tracksuits and puffer jackets galore for autumn winter 2017. [Photo: Getty]

Athleisure sported on the streets
And yep, we listened. The street style set wouldn’t be prepped for fashion week without a Champion tracksuit or two. This year, we also learnt that it’s totally acceptable to team kitten heels with track pants (even if your mum doesn’t get it). [Photo: Instagram]

Mancunian fashion blogger Megan Ellaby is no stranger to seventies-inspired ruffles so take to her blog for sartorial inspiration this season. [Photo: @meganellaby]

Pink on the runway
This wouldn’t be a trend gallery without pink now, would it? Yes, the hue of the season has reigned at the top for the past few years. We had an indication that it would resurface when the likes of Valentino and Balenciaga sent models down the runway in the millennial shade… [Photo: Getty]

Ugly footwear on the runway
We thought we bid cheerio to ugly footwear a few seasons ago but if Prada’s SS18 show is anything to go by, they’re back and well, uglier than ever. [Photo: Getty]

Ugly footwear on the streets
You can thank the Scandi pack for the ugly footwear taking to the streets this season. With a penchant for chunky New Balance lace-ups, they’re juxtaposing floral Ganni dresses with sports footwear left, right and centre. And we cannot get enough. We’re not sure we’re cool enough to pull off the look though. [Photo: @pernilleteisbaek]

The puffer on the runway
Last autumn, the fash pack was well and truly divided. Thanks to Balenciaga, the nineties puffer jacket made a surprising comeback. And we weren’t all on board. But whether you’re a fan or not, they’re here to stay. [Photo: Getty]

The basket bag on the runway
The wicker basket bag landed on the runway in autumn 2016 and ever since, we’ve been guilty of collecting a couple. We blame Tory Burch for our newfound obsession. [Photo: Getty]

The basket bag on the streets
Over the summer, it was almost an unsaid competition between bloggers to see who had managed to bag the best wicker number. And the Instagram infiltration certainly resulted in us swiping our cards a few times ahead of our holidays. [Photo: @camillecharriere]

The French must-have on the runway
For her Dior debut, Maria Grazia Chiuri sought inspiration from the label’s roots. Yes, the designer brought back the most quintessentially French accessory in existence. The beret. Merci! [Photo: Getty]

The French must-have on the streets
Bloggers have been channelling the Parisian aesthetic ever since Dior gave us sartorial lessons in the art of French dressing. Regardless of the season, it’s a keeper. [Photo: Lea Schleiffer]

The Ganni must-have on the runway
Swedish label of the moment, Ganni, has successfully dressed a large majority of the fashion crowd for a second year running. And we can’t say we’re surprised. Who could possibly resist the temptation of the brand’s slogan t-shirts and our personal favourite, the smock dress? [Photo: @ganni]

The Ganni must-have on the streets
It was a struggle to narrow this down to one street style snap but what better way to wear the smock dress than with a pair of lace-ups? Seek inspo from the Scandi pack this season. [Photo: @ganni]

Pyjama dressing on the runway

The life cycle of a fashion trend is short.
An item hits the runway ready to be photographed and streamed live to style fanatics across the globe. And within a matter of minutes, show reports will crop up on Google and we’ll all briefed what we need to buy ahead of next season. And once it’s been Instagrammed, tagged and Snapchatted, we’re done. Just like that.
But every once in a while, a trend outlives its expiry date. And this year has proven more than ever, that it’s a good idea not to throw anything away.
Yes, 2017 sparked a few fashion memories from seasons gone by. We’re talking nineties-inspired puffer jackets, formally faux-pas kitten heels and every lazy girl’s beloved favourite, the pyjama suit.
So as we reach the end of the year, take a look back at the most popular fashion trends of 2017 from miniature handbags to supersized earrings.
