If you're expecting a little one this year but are stuck on what name to pick, your'e in luck, as the most popular baby names of 2024 have been officially unveiled.

Parenting is no easy feat, and it can even be more daunting to pick the moniker that your newborn will bare forever. Luckily, the latest trends in baby names, compiled by BabyCentre, as their extensive list - which is updated every month

The competitive list, published in January, shows trends in girl names ending in 'a' were hugely popular last year, in addition to baby boys being given surnames.

"Olivia" and "Muhammad" held onto their previous top spots on the list. In fact, the top 10 boys' names remained the same as 2023, all the way up to spot 15, where the name "Archie" climbed the list by two ranks.

The girls' list also remained consistent in terms of the top 10, despite a few changes in the ranks. "Lily" moved up to third place while "Isla" slipped down the ranks to fourth. "Grace" made it up to rank sixth, "Ava" held onto fifth, and "Willow" remained at number 10 on the list.

Here's a closer look at the popularity patterns of last year's top baby names, as well as the top 100 for boys and girls below.

'A' trend for the year

Almost 50 per cent of girls’ names in the chart this year end in an "a". This trend truly triumphed over the list with 46 out of 100 girls' names following this pattern.

Last name, first choice

Surnames as forenames was the biggest trend in the boys' top 100. "Hunter" (74t), "Harrison" (51st) and "Mason" (52nd) rose as favourites. These American-inspired names emphasise individuality and introduce a new wave of name ideas for baby boys.

The underdogs

The name "Ryan" shot up 12 spots to take number 53 on the list, making it the dark horse of the boys' top 100. For the girls' list, "Emma" and "Ariella" both ranked 13 places higher than previously, at spot 76 and 84 respectively, while "Sarah" shot up by 12 spots to claim rank 55.

Falling from grace

When some baby names gained popularity, others dropped down the ranks. "Amelie" dropped down 12 ranks all the way to spot 94, and at 95th place, "Lucy" fell by 11. The name "Jaxon" plummeted 14 spots to take 64th, while "Austin" crashed by 13 spots to rank at 91st place, perhaps likely to miss the top 100 altogether by next year.

New names on the block

"Margot" (88th) made a surprising debut to the girls' top 100, perhaps due to the unwavering success of the Barbie film starring, of course, Margot Robbie, who herself was seen as a mum-to-be in 2024. "Gabriella" also debuted the chart at 99th place.

Meanwhile, the boys' list saw "Matthew" and "Elliot" debut the chart at 88th and 95th respectively.

Crashing out

"Nova" and "Lilly" both lost their places in the girls' top 100. While "Lily" was on the rise this year, the spelling of the name with a double "l" lost support. "Jason" fell out of the boys' list after reigning over the chart for years.
