Morgan Freeman has apologised after sexual harassment allegations were made against him.

The 80-year-old actor has been accused by eight women of sexual misconduct. One production assistant claims he harassed her for months during the filming of Going In Style. According to her, he repeatedly tried to lift up her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear.

Morgan has now released a statement apologising.

“Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy,” he said. “I apologise to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected – that was never my intent.”

The aforementioned production assistant was among eight women to tell CNN they had been the victims of harassment from the Shawshank Redemption star.

She said that during the incidents, another actor, Alan Arkin, “made a comment telling him to stop. Morgan got freaked out and didn't know what to say.”

Meanwhile a woman who worked on the 2013 film Now You See Me said staff knew “not to wear any top that would show our breasts, not to wear anything that would show our bottoms” or any close-fitting clothes if Morgan was around.

CNN also said it had spoken to dozens more people who worked Morgan, some of whom praised him and insisted his behaviour was always professional.
