Mom surprises son with trip of a lifetime after ‘tough 2 years’

After some tough years of remote schooling, a mom gave her son the best surprise.

TikToker Deona Smith and her son Joseph Smith are cofounders of Culture Kids, an online toy shop that provides inspiring books, games and puzzles for kids of color. So when Deona wanted to treat Joseph to something amazing, it’s no shock the mom chose a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

This Brooklyn home office gets a California-inspired makeover with just $1,000:

It all started when Joseph and his mom were about to board a plane to Chicago for spring break — or so he thought.

“It’s been a tough two years with COVID, homeschooling and illnesses. We deserve to treat ourselves,” Deona wrote in the caption.

In the clip, Joseph and Deona were in the airport lobby getting ready to check in. Deona handed Joseph a closed envelope and explained a little bit about the letter inside.

“This is for all of our hard work and [our] first trip since COVID-19. I just wanted to do a little something special for you,” Deona told him. “A little surprise.”

Joseph opened the envelope. Inside was a card that read, “You’re going to Paris.”

“When?” he asked.

“Right now!” the mom told him.

Joseph looked completely stunned and elated. He thought he was going to Chicago, but nope, the mom had plans to whisk him overseas all along.

“We’re actually going to Paris, Mom? We’re going to Paris,” he said, practically squealing with excitement.

The video racked up 3.8 million views on TikTok.

“I thought it was gonna say Disney World … This is SO MUCH COOLER!” a user wrote.

“The fact that he is THIS excited about Paris at his age speaks volumes,” another said.

“The Black boy in me is crying and healing. Thank you for loving your son so deeply,” a person commented.

The mom explained why she chose Paris in the caption of a follow-up video.

“Why Paris? Joseph loves art and museums,” Deona wrote. “We visit them when we travel. He asked to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower, but just as important was seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum. He studied it in school.”
