When Marisa Shumaker, who goes by Kaisa on TikTok, went to set up her 4-year-old daughter's Christmas present — a keyboard — on Christmas Eve, she realized there was no keyboard included in the box. She went into "full-blown panic mode."

The Harford County, Md., local says she had ordered the keyboard on Amazon, and it arrived in a "giant" box. The stand was substantially heavy, so she didn’t think to open it beforehand, assuming she wouldn’t be able to hide it due to its size.

"I was so worried that this would be the end of the Santa magic for my 4-year-old daughter," Shumaker, 26, tells PEOPLE exclusively, recalling the moment. "We had just watched The Santa Clause movie the night before, and it made me think of when Neil and Laura were discussing what gift they didn’t receive that made them stop believing in Santa."

"This keyboard was the one and only thing she had asked Santa for over and over again, so my heart was definitely leaping out of my chest at the thought that her Christmas spirit would be broken so early," she adds.

Right away, Shumaker went online hoping to purchase another keyboard, but since it was Christmas Eve, she couldn’t find anywhere to get it in time. So, she decided to turn to her local community Facebook group for help and advice.

People responded with suggestions, including writing a letter from Santa saying the keyboard had fallen off the sleigh, which is exactly what Shumaker decided to do. As she was hard at work handwriting the letter in her best cursive, she received a message from a man who owned the exact keyboard she was looking for. Although it was 2 a.m., the man said he would be happy to drop it off.

"I was elated that there was a glimmer of hope that Christmas could be saved, but of course, I was a little nervous too," Shumaker tells PEOPLE. "This was either going to end up being a special on the Hallmark Channel or the ID Channel, but desperate times call for desperate measures."

"I was willing to take a leap of faith, confident that Santa would show up and not some crazed ax murderer," she adds, explaining how she met the man across the street in a Safeway parking lot. "We did meet in a well-surveilled parking lot. I just want to clear that up because many people are thinking I brought this guy I didn’t know to my house at 2 a.m. I was definitely panicking, but not completely out of my mind!"

"When he showed up with the keyboard, my knees were buckling as I told him, 'Thank you for saving my daughter's Christmas. You don’t know how much this means to me!' " she continues. "I felt like all I could do was thank him a million times because words couldn’t describe the amount of gratitude I felt toward this man."

Upon receiving the keyboard, Shumaker says it was far beyond what she had expected. She would’ve been grateful to receive even a grungy old keyboard, but the one he handed her looked brand new, with the manufacturer stickers still on it.

After thanking him profusely, she asked if he had Facebook Pay because she didn’t have any cash on hand and wanted to pay him for the kind gift. But he told her he didn’t need any payment — he just wanted to see how happy the keyboard made her daughter on Christmas morning.

"Santa had his two teenage children with him in the car — I believe they were Santa’s little helpers," she says. "I got the sense that he wanted to show them how a simple random act of kindness could impact a child on Christmas Day. I felt amazed and shocked that he cared more about my daughter’s feelings on Christmas morning than the money I was offering him. Not many people are like that!"

Shumaker agreed to send them a video of her daughter’s reaction, which she did. She also posted a follow-up message in the local Facebook group, thanking him and hoping the community would see his act of kindness and help her return the blessing to him.

Along with this, she turned to TikTok, where she posted a video explaining the real-life Christmas miracle she'd experienced. Since then, her video has gone viral, amassing 3.9 million views and more than 9,000 comments.

"I couldn’t believe the response," Shumaker says. "I wasn’t expecting it to reach as far as it did — people have commented from South Africa, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand — I'm still amazed by how far this story has reached!"

"I feel honored that my story has resonated so much with everyone, that it has restored faith in humanity for so many. And of course, that this Christmas miracle has shown so many people that Santa is, in fact, very real."

Later on Christmas morning, Shumaker's daughter eventually woke up and flew downstairs to open her presents. She rushed to the living room, her eyes immediately zoning in on the plate of cookies, milk and carrots they’d left for the reindeer. At first, she didn’t even notice the keyboard.

But once she turned to see the presents around the tree and her eyes landed on the piano, it was game over.

"She didn’t have any interest in unwrapping any other presents for an hour. Her older sister had opened most of her presents by the time Riri finally could pry herself away from her newly beloved keyboard," Shumaker says.

"For the entirety of Christmas Day, Riri remained glued to that piano," she adds. "We had to pry her away from it to eat Christmas dinner! She even learned to play 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' on it by Christmas afternoon. Santa truly saved Christmas for my daughter. She is incredibly thankful and grateful for this gift. If only she knew that her mama actually met the real-life Santa Claus at 2 a.m. to get this keyboard for her."

"I hope this inspires everyone to be kind, always," she continues. "Do what you can to help those around you whenever the opportunity presents itself. Love and kindness are the magic behind the Christmas spirit — and it doesn’t have to be limited to just December!"
