  • Kinderhotels offer childcare and a host of fun activities for kids of all ages. Grown-ups can break off for dinners and relaxation time at separate spas and pools

  • During her family's six-night stay at Moar Gut in Austria, she and her husband got to spend time relaxing and skiing while her kids were kept entertained in ski school or at the pool and playgrounds

In Europe, family vacations don't have to revolve around a kid-friendly itinerary: There are places to stay in style without leaving the little ones at home, and they're known as Kinderhotels.

Travel expert and content creator Anna Karsten summed up what it's like to stay at these unique accommodations abroad in an Instagram Reel that's reached over 2.9 million viewers. She compiled clips from her own family's six-night stay at the Moar Gut resort in Austria, where she and her husband Matthew took advantage of the hotel's parent-friendly approach to traveling with kids.

Karsten tells PEOPLE that she ventured to this specific Alpine destination on a friend's recommendation, but she'd previously stayed at Kinderhotels when she was a child growing up in Poland.

As the mom of two explained in her now-viral video, Kinderhotels offer an experience unlike most classic conceptions of family getaways. They can range in levels of luxury, but these lodgings are a far cry from "tacky places full of screaming kids," as Karsten described.

"They cater [to] absolutely everyone — kids and adults. Everything you need for your kids is there ... You don’t need to bring absolutely anything," she said, noting that Kinderhotels typically have strollers, high chairs, special food, cribs and more available for guest use. They also have childcare options for all ages, including infants.

"Adults can enjoy child-free time, as there is even a separate pool area and a spa if you need a break from little ones," Karsten said. At dinner time, she added, "kids are taken away for entertainment so parents can eat their five-course meal in peace, or if they want to, they can go with them."

While the grown-ups relax, the big kids can play at indoor and outdoor playgrounds and pools, spend time with farm animals and ride horses or ponies, among other fun options. In the winter, most Kinderhotels have ski schools on site with easy pick-up and drop-off, so parents can hit the slopes without worries.

"Most importantly, all these places feel like stylish hotels that simply offer things and stuff to do for families and children," the blogger said in her Reel, which garnered over 51,000 likes on the app.

During her winter vacation at Moar Gut, Karsten tells PEOPLE she and her husband enjoyed watching their sons Dylan, 5, and Holden, 3, on the bunny slope. When they split off to ski on the regular mountain, a hotel employee brought the boys to meet their parents for lunch and escorted them back to lessons after the meal.

"There were things to do for everyone, without having to sacrifice others’ needs," she recalls of their group getaway. "If the kids were done with dinner and we weren’t, there was an animation for them, or they could pop into [the] kids club … where they were safe and happy."

Like most other Kinderhotels, their precious, "quiet adult-only time" at Moar Gut did come at a taller price, but Karsten says fees aren't always so steep. She tells PEOPLE that price depends on the season, and they're most expensive during the height of summer and winter holidays.

Parents can save more planning visits during off-peak weeks, but Karsten notes that the overall costs are relative: "While it’s pricey for Europeans, it’s much cheaper than a mid-range hotel in the U.S. and undeniably cheaper than a resort vacation in the Caribbean or in the U.S," she explains.

For those looking for less luxurious stays, Karsten recommends Eurocamps as "alternate and more budget-friendly options." These economical stays still have ways to keep everyone entertained, often in the form of a waterpark or a similar attraction.
