A Modern Bungalow With a Secluded Pool in L.A.’s Echo Park Hits the Market $3.65 Million

Dodgers Stadium isn’t the only thing that brings people to L.A.’s trendy Echo Park neighborhood. Along with some good eats, the hilly neighborhood bordering Elysian Park is also home to some great views.

Residents in the downtown-adjacent area are known to shack up in craftsman- and Victorian-style homes, but there are also modern residences that step outside the usual real estate box. One eye-catching contemporary home that just splashed on the market for $3.65 million was created by architect Rachel Allen, who’s behind the redevelopment of downtown’s Pershing Square. Jonah Wilson of Carolwood Estates holds the listing.

The three-bedroom home was built in 2008 in an Eden-esque setting by the acclaimed landscape architecture studio Terremoto. A main house, a detached carport, and a separate artist studio, all invisible from the street behind architectural fencing, secured gates, and dense foliage, sit on the property that spreads across about half an acre of hillside land. The former was constructed with a split-level design that enhances “light and flow” throughout, the listing notes, while the wooden walls of the studio are illuminated through a huge, hinged wall of glass that opens like a garage door onto a private balcony. Lush foxtail agave and a variety of fruit trees complement the home’s scenic views.

But let’s start at the top, literally. The main residence’s upper-level entrance sits past a wood-planked bridge that leads to a Piet Mondrian-like entry with a front door framed by a grid of glass panes in various sizes. Allen’s design sees the 1,769-square-foot house suspended among oak trees, which becomes immediately apparent on stepping into the foyer where floor-to-ceiling glass walls frame landscape views.

The living and dining areas are set atop sustainably harvested walnut floors, and custom built-ins for your favorite tomes and tchotchkes act as a buffer between the open-air space and the adjacent kitchen area. Here, baby blue cabinetry pops against a white ceramic tile backsplash and modern stainless-steel appliances. A simple breakfast bar is a good spot for quick bites.

Laser-cut plywood sunshades cover the glass ceiling along the home’s central corridor leading to a couple of bedrooms and a bathroom with bright yellow and pale blue starburst-patterned tile. The primary suite is situated on the lower level with an en suite bathroom featuring variegated blue mosaic tile and dark wood contrasts from the sinks to showers.

An awning-covered flagstone patio alongside the house is an ideal spot for quiet relaxing and entertaining among citrus, pomegranate, yucca, pine, and eucalyptus trees. Native plants and wildflowers also span the property, next to organic vegetable beds and a chicken coop. The secluded pool, which includes an inset spa, is positioned below the house and shaded by trees.
