Mock house party portrays dangers of teen drinking, drug use
Apr. 18—HARROD — Allen East students organized a mock house party Thursday to teach their parents and teachers about the pressures students encounter at parties today.
The high school's Students Against Destructive Decisions club performed a series of skits in which teens pressured each other to play beer pong, smoke weed and take drugs unknowingly laced with fentanyl.
The skits were based on anonymous surveys the club conducted in January to learn what dangers their peers witnessed at house parties.
About half of those students reported that someone had been sexually assaulted or taken drugs they didn't know about at a house party they attended, said Sierra Studer, a junior Allen East SADD member, who portrayed a date-rape victim during Thursday's mock party.
"We're trying to do this to make parents aware of what risks their kids are (seeing)," Studer said. Teachers "can be a support system for us," she added.
Representatives from Intoxalock, the maker of portable breathalyzers marketed to parents, attended Thursday's mock party to talk about its new Keepr device. The portable breathalyzer takes a photo anytime someone breathes into the device, which syncs with a phone app so parents can verify their child is sober.
Allen East SADD faculty advisor Kelly Prichard said the device can develop trust between teens and parents.
"They can request (a breath test) at any time," Prichard said. "Or they can schedule (tests) for their kids just to make sure they know where their kid is."
