A Minimalist Mansion in Australia With Direct Beach Access Was Just Listed for $26.4 Million

Australia’s Byron Bay has become a celeb-loved hideout, with everyone from Chris Hemsworth to Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman calling this affluent seaside town home. Now, a coastal retreat steps from the area’s picturesque (and dog friendly) Belongil Beach is up for grabs. In what was once a sleepy fishing village, the modern masterpiece from high-end real estate developer Shane Smollen has been listed for approximately $26.2 million (or $39 million AUD). On the market with Knight Frank and McGrath, the New South Wales property sits on about half an acre of land, and, altogether, the palatial pad features five bedroom suites and six bathrooms across its impressive 22,571 square feet.

“The house is strong, robust, and minimalist in style,” said Smollen, who’s also the owner of the property. “There’s a lot of finesse in this house, and anybody who understands design and construction or has a very good eye for detail will be able to look into the property’s finishes and see its monumental style.”

Smollen originally purchased the parcel at 8 Border Street back in 2019 and tapped Melbourne’s Workroom Design architects for the design and the award-winning Byron Bay-based Atlanta Building for the construction. The project itself was a whopping four years in the making, and the resulting waterfront estate could set a sales record if it comes close to reaching its hefty asking price.

The contemporary structure is laid out in a U-shape with sprawling views that stretch from the Pacific Ocean to Julian Rocks and the Cape Byron Lighthouse. Internally, the abode sports soaring 14-foot Blackbutt ceilings, sliding Vitrosca doors, Italian travertine flooring, and tons of marble throughout. Of course, there are high-tech touches too, such as a solar power system and AV technology.

Highlights of the home include the state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen, which is equipped with a large island made from white Dolomite stone, in addition to top-of-the-line appliances from Wolf and Sub-Zero. Elsewhere, the living room is kitted out with a sculptural fireplace with a black steel chimney and marble hearth.

Other standout spaces include a movie theater with a big-screen projector, a glass-wrapped sunroom that faces the ocean, a gymnasium, and a self-contained guest suite with a private terrace. The estate also has an enviable 98 feet of northern frontage and a private pathway straight to the beach, which is hands down the best part.
