For those who have not been trained in royal protocol, it may be difficult to know how to act upon meeting a member of the royal family—and that is certainly the case with Miles Teller.

In a new interview, the actor revealed he totally "messed up" his greeting to Prince William and Princess Kate when he met them in London this May at the Royal Film Performance screening for his film Top Gun: Maverick.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this Wednesday, Teller said that he and his film co-stars were given a list of "rules of dos and don'ts" for when it came time for them to meet the royals. He added, "There’s a lot of etiquette ... and I kind of had a sheet so I wouldn’t mess it up."

And yet, he immediately did.

"Right off the bat I messed up," he said. "You’re not supposed to extend your hand right off the bat unless they do. But I felt the vibe, so I’m like, 'I’m going in, I’m going in.'"

Teller joked that he got so star-struck upon meeting the new prince and princess of Wales that he "blacked out."

When Fallon showed a photo of Teller shaking hands with William, Teller explained what was going through his head. "I was lost in Prince William’s eyes ... I mean, blue as the bluest ocean, Jimmy, what do you want? Bora Bora," he said. "And Kate is beautiful and very cordial and holds herself so well, yeah, regal. But with William I don’t know, I blacked out."

He added that he thinks after that interaction, Prince William is "a lifelong fan" of his now. "I was just picking up what he was putting down," Teller joked.
