An inquest into the death of diet expert Dr Michael Mosley will be heard in private, it has been confirmed. The author and creator of diet plans including the Fast 800 died after going for a walk in near 40C heat during a holiday with his family in Greece.

After he failed to return, a major search was carried out for the missing doctor, with his body tragically discovered four days later. Greek authorities said his death was a result of natural causes.

Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou said at the time there was no evidence of injury on his body to suggest an alternative cause of death. However an inquest into his death will be held by the Buckinghamshire coroner in the UK.

This was due to be held next month however, following a request from Dr Mosley's family, this has been brought forward and will now be heard "on the papers". It is listed to be held next week but no date is yet confirmed, reports The Mirror.

It will be a closed hearing as rather than calling experts and other witnesses, such as Dr Mosley's family and friends, to give evidence the coroner will decide what happened by examining the circumstances through written submissions. These hearings are allowed when the coroner is satisfied about the medical cause of death and the surrounding circumstances.

A spokesman for the coroner's office confirmed the decision. They said: "We have delayed the formal inquest date in order to accommodate a request from the family to conclude the Inquest on the papers."

Dr. Mosley, known for his diet and weight loss expertise became famous as a result of his TV shows, podcasts, and bestselling books on diet plans. His plans included The Fast 800, 5:2, The Way of Life, and The Fast 800 Keto.

He died during a break in Greece after spending the day at Agios Nikolaos beach on the island of Symi with his wife, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, and friends on June 5. He was last seen alive by his family when he left the beach to go for a walk.

When he failed to return a major land and sea search was carried out by rescue teams and local volunteers. However it was not until four days later that his body was discovered in a rugged area not far from where they stayed in Agia Marina.

Dr Bailey later confirmed her husband's body had been discovered. She said at the time he appeared to have attempted an "incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn't be easily seen" by those searching for him.

Greek authorities said Dr Mosley had left the beach at 1.30pm but it appeared he had died just two and a half hours later at about 4pm. It was said at the time that temperatures were nearly 40C.

Buckinghamshire Coroner's Court said the inquest would be held on November 14 at 2pm but then rescheduled it for January 16 at 12.40pm. However it has now been brought forward to be held as the "on papers" hearing.

A notice on the website currently says the hearing will be this week however it has been confirmed it will now be next week. Under a heading of list of inquests to be completed in writing it simply says: "Michael Hugh Mosley. Died 5 June 2024 in Greece. Home address, Beaconsfield. Aged 67 years."
