Metallics, rather appropriately, ruled on the Golden Globes red carpet
Christmas might be over, but the first major Hollywood red carpet of 2025 was all about the festive sparkle. At the Golden Globes – which sees the best of TV and film celebrated, meaning double the amount of star power – metallics ruled, from chainmail Alexander McQueen to golden Balenciaga sequins, giving us a hint that this year's award season style might be all about high-octane glamour over classic black ballgowns.
One of our favourite looks came courtesy of Angelina Jolie who opted for one of Seán McGirr's best designs for Alexander McQueen so far, a partly sheer chainmail gown that came down the house's spring/summer 2025 catwalk last October. The design, with much of the collection, was inspired by McQueen's autumn/winter 1994 catwalk, and was a striking choice and a new silhouette for Jolie, who often goes much more classic.
Joining her with the silver sparkles was Nicole Kidman in a backless one-shouldered Balenciaga dress which perfectly clung to her figure. She added a dramatic half updo for extra oomph.
However, it was – rather appropriately – gold at the Golden Globes which really ruled. Demi Moore, Mikey Madison, Cate Blanchett and Mindy Kaling all opted for glitzy gold gowns.
Moore – who took home an award for her role in The Substance – was dressed by Armani Privé in a gold satin gown with sequin detailing. Meanwhile Kaling wore gold sequins by Ashi Studio, Madison (who really is one to watch on the red carpet this awards season) looked spectacular in a strapless gold sequinned Balenciaga gown and Blanchett rewore a glitzy gold Louis Vuitton dress that we first saw her in at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024.
Whether the trend for glitzy metallics continues throughout awards season remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain – the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet has set a high standard for some exciting red-carpet fashion this year.
