When you've been invited to Buckingham Palace to receive an honour from the Queen, of course you want to look the part – stylish but not too showy. So it comes as no surprise that Spice Girl Mel B has called in a favour from her bandmate turned design icon Victoria Beckham.

Melanie Brown was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours list for her work with vulnerable women and the domestic violence charity Women's Aid.

And she told Lorraine Kelly on Wednesday morning that she has asked Victoria Beckham to dress her for the ceremony.

She revealed: “I did actually ask her. I’m taking my mum and so I did say, ‘Can you dress me and my mum?’ I’m going to see her at her son’s wedding anyway. Yeah Victoria, it would be great!”

But host Kelly joked that Brown had to include some of her signature leopard print in her awards ceremony look, saying: "Maybe not something from the Spice Girls days…

"But you have to have a little bit of leopard print in there, maybe a wee pair of leopard print shoes or something like that? Because you know, you have to have a nod in the direction.”

Brown has worked tirelessly to support survivors of domestic abuse. She split from her husband Stephen Belafonte in 2018 after a decade, claiming she had suffered abuse – allegations he has repeatedly denied.

Speaking to The Sun about learning she had received the honour, she said: "I thought about all the women I've met over the past few years who have been through terrible situations, women who have died, women who are still suffering.

"Receiving that letter telling me about the MBE... it was the first time I thought that I'd done something. Not as a Spice Girl, but as Melanie Brown – this working-class, mixed-race kid from Leeds who has always done her own thing, regardless.

"That made me feel incredibly proud of myself, of all women who've been through similar experiences and of all the people who have helped me along this path."

Brown also revealed that Spice Girls fans expecting a reunion for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year are likely to be disappointed. She explained: “I would love to do that, but sadly I don’t think we’re going to be part of it, which is not my decision but I’ll be there cheering on anyway.”
