This is why Meghan Markle wore a sheer engagement dress

While it’s no surprise that soon-to-be royal newlyweds Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are all about being progressive, some were still shocked when Markle sported a sheer dress for their engagement portraits.

The official engagement photos, released in December, displayed the very much in love couple, with Prince Harry in a classic suit and Markle in a Ralph & Russo couture gown. Markle’s outfit selection was abnormal for a royal announcement due to both its sheer, beaded bodice — and its $75,000 price tag. While some weren’t happy with the less-traditional option, the photos were a testament to the couple’s unique personalities and approach to the royal lifestyle.

Photographer Alexi Lubormirski was surprised at the reaction to Markle’s dress, considering the simple process the couple followed in selecting their outfits, he told Entertainment Tonight.

“To be honest, we tried on a couple of different things and that was just one that she felt comfortable in, so we weren’t really thinking, ‘Is it nude?’ or anything. We just thought, ‘Feel comfortable and let’s make some nice pictures’,” Lubormirski said.

He also said his job came relatively easy.

“When I went to meet them to see if we vibed, they were just cutesy and every time they looked at each other they were like, [giggling],” said the photographer. “I was like, ‘This is gonna be great. This is gonna be easy.’ I said, ‘I just want to shoot you like this. This is what you’re like.”

Prince Harry and Markle will tie the knot on May 19. And if the engagement photos are any indication, Markle’s wedding dress will be exactly what she wants for the big day — royal obligations aside.
