Meghan Markle still isn't a British citizen

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married in May 2018, US citizen Meghan joined the British Royal Family and became the Duchess of Sussex. You might assume that this automatically made Meghan a British Citizen, but it turns out that's not quite the case.

That means that since getting engaged to Harry in 2017, Meghan has spent the last two years performing Royal duties, representing the United Kingdom and, yes, even giving birth to the Queen's great-grandson Archie without actually being given British citizenship.

However, it looks like Meghan could become a British citizen soon. The Duchess reportedly applied for citizenship after announcing her engagement to Prince Harry in November 2017, but she is being treated like everybody else who goes through the process which can include long wait times. Although that might seem frustrating, we think it's pretty cool that Meghan isn't expecting special treatment.

When the couple's engagement was announced in 2017, Prince Harry's communication's secretary, Jason Knauf, said Meghan would be "compliant with immigration requirements at all times."

Meghan's friend has now told the Daily Mail, "Meghan is not yet a British citizen. It might seem extraordinary, given that she's been married to the Queen's grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it's a slow process."

A Kensington Palace spokesperson revealed to the Daily Mail that "the process takes several years."

With Meghan most likely applying for British citizenship as a spouse of a British citizen, some of the things she may be required to do include taking a test on life in the UK, which includes questions on British values, history, traditions and everyday life. She may also have to prove her knowledge of English and that she is of good character, as do all people who apply for British citizenship.

With Meghan now two years into the application process, we expect her to have that British passport soon.
