Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Speak Out About Meta's 'Deeply Deceptive' Fact-Checking Move
As they continue apace with their 2025 re-brand, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren't shying away from speaking out about what they have called the 'deeply deceptive' policies of Silicon Valley tech overlords.
Following the news that Meta would be abandoning the use of independent fact checkers on its platforms, which include Facebook, Threads and Instagram, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared their disapproval of the decision on the website of their charity, Archewell Foundation.

'It doesn’t matter whether your views are left, right or somewhere in between — the latest news from Meta about changes to their policies directly undermines free speech. This should deeply concern us all,' began a statement titled 'Fact-checking Media' on the Archewell website. 'Contrary to the company’s talking points, allowing more abuse and normalising hate speech serves to silence speech and expression, not foster it.'
'In an already confusing and, in many instances, intentionally disruptive information environment, Meta has shown their words and commitments have very little meaning or integrity. As they announce these changes undoubtedly responding to political winds, they once again abandon public safety in favour of profit, chaos, and control,' it continued in an apparent reference to the upcoming inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
Since stepping back as working senior members of the Royal Family in 2020, Markle and Prince Harry have endeavoured to continue to hold those in power to account. In 2020, they joined a Colour of Change campaign to pressure Facebook to change its policies around hate speech and in August 2024, the couple announced the launch of the Archewell Parents’ Network, an online support group for those who have lost children to harm encountered online.
Prince Harry is also continuing his lawsuit against the publisher of The Sun over allegations of unlawful information gathering, despite the fact that 39 other cases against the publisher, including those involving Hugh Grant and Sienna Miller, have been settled since a previous hearing in July 2024.
