Meet Nasher, the gamer who collaborates with the NHL

Andrew Telfer, professionally known as Nasher, is a social media powerhouse who turned his love of hockey into a career.

Telfer is a YouTuber and Twitch streamer with one goal: to get as many people passionate about hockey as possible, whether it’s video games or real National Hockey League (NHL) games. The Columbus, Ohio native is snagging sponsorship deals like an actual NHL player and working with brands including Bauer, Gatorade, Adidas and SeatGeek.

“On my channel, I put on the game, play and people just like to see natural reactions,” Telfer told In The Know. “I try to just be fancy, like embarrass people a little bit, have fun with it. I’ll get my friends online and we’ll play together as a team and people just loved seeing that.”

Telfer also plays ice hockey and roller hockey in real life. He’s been playing the sport since he was a kid.

“My parents luckily got me into it at a pretty early age,” Telfer said. “We would play literally every single day after school. When it got dark outside and I couldn’t go outside and play hockey or my friends, they couldn’t come over, it was too late, gaming is kind of what I would turn to.”

He started his YouTube channel (which has over 502,000 subscribers at press time) senior year of high school but didn’t make much of it. After graduating from college and getting a job at Wendy’s corporate office, he noticed that every once and a while an old video would go viral.

“Like every now and then, they just get like a million views or two million views,” he said. “I started to realize this could be something big if I actually took some time and fully dedicated myself to it.”

When he committed to uploading four or five videos a week, things took off from there. Eventually, he was able to quit his day job.

“The NHL actually reached out to me and they wanted me to be an esports commentator,” Telfer said. “So taking that commentary that I did for myself and using it on the big stage and now we’re on TV and there’s $100,000 on the line.”

For the hockey-lover, it’s not just about the opportunities his unconventional career has afforded him but also about the relationships he has been able to build along the way.

“My goal entirely is to help as many people get into it as I can,” Telfer said. “People have reached out to me and they’re like, I started playing hockey because of you or I started playing NHL because of you. When I see those comments and kind of the difference that we’re making, that’s what really means the world.”
