McDonald’s Monopoly is the highlight of the year for a lot of British people. Forget Christmas. Who cares about Valentine’s Day? Easter? Pffft. It’s all about winning those prizes on McDonald’s Monopoly.
So, imagine our disappointment last year when it was cancelled because of everything that was going on in 2020 (eurgh - what a year, eh?). To say we're gutted would be an understatement, but we get it.
McDonald's Monopoly 2021
McDonald's just shared a teaser on its social media channels, which featured the silhouette of someone who looks very familiar with the words, "Coming summer 2021".
When does McDonald’s Monopoly usually start?
It was set to start in March last year, and seeing as it has started in March every year before that, we might have assumed it would start around now. But with everything still up in the air a little, it makes sense to push it back.
Thanks to the social media updates on McDonald's official pages, we know it'll be with us in summer. We don't have an exact date, but as soon as we do, you'll be the first to know.
Why was McDonald's Monopoly 2020 cancelled?
In a statement from McDonald's last year, it said that it had cancelled it due to the level of excitement it brings, which would have put too much pressure on staff at an already difficult time.
"We took the decision to close our restaurants shortly before this year's Monopoly promotion was due to launch," McDonald's said in a press release last year.
"We know many of you enjoy this promotion, which has run since 2005 in the UK. To enable safe working and social distancing inside our restaurants and to minimise the pressure on our employees, we have decided to cancel this year's Monopoly VIP campaign.
"It creates a great deal of excitement inside our restaurants and relies heavily upon menu items we cannot safely reintroduce yet."
How to play McDonald’s Monopoly
Here's how it works...
McDonald’s Monopoly is basically the same as regular Monopoly – you have to collect as many sets of streets as possible, and you get these by ordering McDonald’s food. Each thing you order off the menu will come with Monopoly token, so you just have to hope you get the one you’re in the market for.
Obviously, some of these are rarer than others, as these are the ones that will get you more impressive prizes.
