Eternals stars Gemma Chan and Richard Madden have made history this year, by appearing in the first ever sex scene depicted in an MCU movie, and now they've revealed how it felt to film it.

Chan plays Sersi while Madden plays Icaris, who have been in a 5,000 year-long relationship, and though the two actors know that their scene is a significant milestone, they simply wanted to make the scene seem authentic.

Madden told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I just saw [the sex scene] more in the storytelling of these two characters and having that intimate moment between them. I didn't really see it in the context of the MCU, the bigger picture, or Disney, for that matter.'

Madden feels that if he had 'actually thought about the scale of that or the significance' of the scene, it would have made it much more nerve-racking to film.

Though sex scenes are usually somewhat awkward to film, as we know from favourite Christmas film Love Actually, Chan says that their friendship was key to minimising that feeling: 'It helped that Richard and I have a trust with each other and a history. I could feel that we had each other's backs in that scene. To do scenes like that can be quite a vulnerable thing, so I felt lucky with my friend.'

The pair also 'talked about the concept of people who've been in love for that long,' so they could fully explore their characters' relationship 'delicately.'

Ikaris (Madden) has the ability to manipulate cosmic energy and fly, while Sersi (Chan) can trans-mutate objects into any power, and they have been in an on-and-off relationship for over 5,000 years due to their immortality. Though much focus is on their sex scene, the overarching Eternals plot forces the group of superheroes 'out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, the Deviants.'

Eternals has received mixed reviews since its release last week, but it has been praised as a "unique" MCU film.

Eternals is out now in cinemas.
