We can always rely on trusty Marks & Spencer to deliver wardrobe heroes for the new season, and its latest cardigan has gone straight to the top of our wish list.

The Cloud-Yarn Textured Crew Neck Cardigan, £35, is the ultimate transitional dressing staple, and it's already a favourite with Red Editor-in-Chief Sarah Tomczak.

In fact, Sarah featured it in her late-summer must-haves edit as the perfect timeless addition to her autumn/winter repertoire. Here's what she had to say: 'This caught my eye because I’m on the market for a coatigan and this feels like a good knitwear update. The textured design and chunky gold buttons mean it could double as a light jacket or great lady-like layering piece.'

M&S' button-down crew-neck cardigan features patch pockets and ribbed trims for a neat finish, while the textured cloud yarn gives it an extra cosy feel that we know we'll be grateful for on colder days.

It's available in two capsule wardrobe-worthy colourways, too: a light grey with silver buttons and a cappuccino beige with gold detailing.

We can already see these Marks & Spencer cardigans becoming the hardest working pieces in our wardrobes. The light-grey style will look great paired with casual denim on the weekend, while the cappuccino beige will become a go-to for layering over autumnal midi dresses at the office.

We'll take one of each, please, especially with those bargain price tags. These cardis are so affordable, while looking so much more expensive, that we don't expect them to stick around for long.

Other chic new M&S buys we're coveting? The leopard print dress with designer vibes; our dream denim dress; an on-trend bow top; and last year's sell-out borg coat, back for another spin in a new colour.

In short: Marks & Spencer has nailed it once again. Run, don't walk.
