Renowned tidying guru Marie Kondo certainly knows a thing or two about getting the home in order (even if she does admit her house is 'messier now' with young children around). From storing clothes upright to tackling personal belongings first, Marie exclusively shares with House Beautiful her five easy tips for a tidy home.

1. Start with your own space

Most people begin by tidying up a shared area such as the living room. But I recommend beginning with a personal area first – such as your wardrobe. This will allow you to enjoy the process, which in turn will motivate you to continue tidying your entire home.

2. Designate a specific place for everything

This will make tidying easier and simpler for everyone in the family, and you'll always know where to find items.

3. Let go of things

When you have too many things you don't need, you inevitably end up with clutter. Review your belongings regularly, selecting what you want to keep, and only hold on to the items that 'spark joy' for you. When you let go of things, do so with a sense of gratitude for the purpose they've served. Feeling grateful for your belongings will make you more inclined to take good care of them and encourage you to put them away after use.

4. Store items upright

Folding and storing clothing and small items upright, rather than piled on top of each other, means they are much easier to see.

5. Make it a family affair

Get each family member into the habit of folding their own clothes and organising their own cupboards. Learning the basics of tidying will make everyone more aware of the need to keep the whole house looking good.
