Margate House: The perfect bolthole for exploring Kent's coolest seaside town
Margate is regarded as the UK's coolest seaside town for a reason.
With its abundance of independent shops, live music venues, restaurants, bars and edgy galleries, plus the world-renowned Turner Contemporary and Tracey Emin's White Cube-backed TKE Studios, on its sandy doorstep, people have countless reasons to flock to this particular patch of the Kent coastline.
There's also another selling point: Swapping the hustle and bustle of city life for lungfuls of fresh sea air, glorious golden beaches, and to get lost gazing out at the horizon. Oh, and if you're brave or into wild swimming, you can immerse yourself in the North Sea.
Excited to experience the buzz of the town for myself, I headed down for a two-day escape, checking in for the night at Margate House, a beautiful converted Georgian townhouse in the Cliftonville area of the town.
Located about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and overlooking historic Dalby Square, Margate House is a stone's throw from the iconic Shell Grotto, Margate Caves and close to the Old Town and its of cosy pubs.
What are the rooms like at Margate House?
There are nine rooms at Margate House. We stayed in a Deluxe Room, a huge, airy room which overlooks the historic Dalby Square and the sea beyond. Its pink and burgundy colour scheme, quirky artwork, plus vintage wooden and rattan furniture tied in perfectly with the hotel's overall aesthetic.
The super kingsize bed was supremely comfortable, with crisp white bedding and huge, cloud-like pillows that your head really sank into. We slept beautifully.

The radio was playing as we first entered the room which I really appreciated - it made the space feel even more welcoming and truly like a home from home. I also loved that the room didn't have a TV, escaping screens is one of modern life's true luxuries.
The colour and texture theme continued in the en-suite bathroom. Furthermore, it had huge fluffy towels and (refillable, no single use plastic here!) products from local, skincare specialist Haeckels, and a powerful waterfall shower.
Eating and drinking at Margate House
There's no restaurant at Margate House, but you can still look forward to a beautiful breakfast. We opted to enjoy ours in bed, and were served a hamper filled with freshly baked croissants, locally produced yogurt and apple juice.
If you're not a bed-eater, then you can opt to enjoy breakfast downstairs in the dining room. Attached to the house's Drawing Room, which doubles up as an informal and very comfortable lobby area, there's a large table flanked by very cool tasselled chairs (which were made bespoke, I was told).
This space is also perfect for enjoying a glass of wine or a cocktail before heading out, or heading up to bed.
Final verdict
Margate House is one of the most charming hotels I have ever stayed at, with kind, friendly staff, beautiful furnishings and decor, with impressive finishing touches - never have I ever seen a rose gold coloured fire extinguisher!
It's perfectly located for exploring Margate and other parts of the Kent coast, or to use as a hide away when you just want a break from your normal life and are craving a night or two of indulgent peace and quiet.
