Kenyan long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge, marathon record holder and the first man in history to run 26.2 miles in under two hours, has revealed his go-to running tracks for motivation—and they might just surprise you.

In a recent interview for leading electronics brand Shokz, for whom Kipchoge is a global ambassador, the marathoner – dubbed the 'philosopher-king of running' – revealed that despite often training in silence, when he needs to dig into the tunes for a little extra oomph, his go-to song is Kelly Clarkson's 'Stronger'.

'I am a fan, a big, big fan of Kelly Clarkson,' Kipchoge beamed when asked about his music selection. 'I listen to all the music of Kelly Clarkson and you know, the first one, "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger". That's what motivates me running'.

The record breaking distance runner went on to explain that the lyrics from the 2011 track remind him of his own experiences with running. 'I still push on. I push on because I have discovered that running cannot kill me, but makes me stronger,' said Kipchoge. 'I also listen to Kenny Rogers', he explained, citing the song 'Coward of the County' as one of his favourites from the Country Music Hall of Fame inductee.

When asked why he favours open ear headphones – which don't slot directly into the ear but project sound from slightly outside, allowing you to still hear your surroundings – Kipchoge said that these are the first headphones he feels truly comfortable running in. 'My mind is always on the run, how many kilometres I've done, how many kilometres I've got to do, but with Shokz [open ear headphones] on, you can be in another world and still enjoy the run'.
