There Are So Many Ways To Cook Sweet Potatoes, But Have You Tried Them All?

What is it about sweet potatoes that makes them so darn tasty? Seriously… no matter how you cook a sweet potato, it’s always delicious and comforting. You can bake them, roast them, mash them, or even make sweet potato fries out of this humble little fella. And the best part is, every single way of cooking sweet potatoes is so easy, anyone can do it.

How to cook a sweet potato in the oven/how to roast sweet potatoes

Roasting sweet potatoes in the oven is a swell way of cooking them to make a tasty side. Or, roasted sweet potato cubes tossed through an autumnal salad make add a delicious hearty element.

Ingredients:

  • 450g sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into 2.5cm pieces

  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

  • Salt

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 240ºC (220ºC fan). On a large baking tray, toss sweet potatoes with oil and season with salt and pepper.

  2. Roast until tender, tossing halfway through, 30 to 35 minutes.

How long to roast sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes should take around 30 – 35 minutes to roast. Check them after 30 minutes, and if they’re not ready, chuck them back in for another five minutes. Keep checking them every five minutes until they’re tender.

How to bake sweet potatoes

If you think baked potatoes are good, juts you wait until you have a baked sweet potato! Load one of these bad boys up with lots of lovely butter cheese, or just about anything, tbh, and that’s lunch sorted.

Ingredients:

  • 4 sweet potatoes, scrubbed clean

  • 4 tbsp. butter

  • Salt

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 220ºC (200ºC fan). On a baking tray, prick sweet potatoes all over with a fork.

  2. Bake until tender, 45 to 50 minutes.

  3. Let cool, then split the tops open with a knife and top with a pat of butter.

  4. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

Did you know you can 'bake' sweet potatoes in your microwave if you're short on time.

How long to bake sweet potatoes

Check your sweet potatoes after 45 minutes, but they may need a little longer. Check them after 45 minutes, but put them back in for a little longer if they don’t seem tender on the inside when you poke them with a fork.

How to cook sweet potato fries

Looking for a side to serve at BBQs? Then sweet potato fries are a great way to go.

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into sticks

  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp. chilli powder

  • Salt

  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/180°C fan.

  2. In a large bowl, toss sweet potatoes with oil and spices. Season with salt and pepper.

  3. Spread your sweet potatoes on a baking tray in one even layer.

  4. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through.

How to make mashed sweet potatoes

Mashing sweet potatoes with butter, cream, maple syrup and thyme is never going to go down badly, is it? Try with sausages and onion gravy *chef’s kiss*.

Ingredients:

  • 6 sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped

  • Salt

  • 180 ml single cream (or milk)

  • 4 tbsp. butter

  • 2 tbsp. maple syrup

  • Freshly ground black pepper

  • Fresh thyme leaves, for serving

Directions:

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with at least 5cm of water. Season generously with salt. Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are very tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

  2. Mash potatoes and add single cream (or milk), butter, and maple syrup. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with thyme leaves.
