If ever there were proof that Manolo Blahnik is still one of the world's most famous and relevant designers, it's the that fact that his shoes still become the centre of international news headlines.

In August, Melania Trump arrived at the Houston floods in Texas wearing a sunglasses, an oversized bomber jacket and a pair of nude Manolo heels. Some described her outfit as inappropriate and somewhat insensitive given the nature of her visit, but Blahnik himself – a man who sleeps for only four hours a night (give him five and he feels "terrific") has been too busy to concern himself with such stories. But, he's certainly not about to criticise her for wearing his shoes.

"I don't think she's insensitive," he says. "I think she's working non-stop to make it work - possibly she was just wearing the shoes she left New York in. Yes, I think probably she could have worn Hunter boots but she was wearing what she was wearing. I'm not good at advising people on what to wear because they wear what they want to."

Many of Blahnik's luxury peers – from Tom Ford to Marc Jacobs – have refused to dress Trump, but he refuses to class himself in that category. The designer and First Lady have been working together "long before all this nonsense".

"They should just get rid of everybody and keep her," he says. "Aesthetically I mean, I'm not talking about politics – I don't give a damn about that and I don't know much about it. But in terms of fashion and beauty – well, I love her, she's a beauty and that's all there is to it."
