Man Demands $1,000 After Referring Friend to a Bank Contest They Won
"When I told my friend about it he was happy for me but a few hours later he wanted half of my money," the person writes on Reddit
An anonymous person posting on Reddit says they won $2,000 as part of a bank promotion via a friend's referral — and now the friend wants half the money.
In a post shared on Reddit, the person writes that the promotion was one in which, "if you refer a friend, both parties will get a scratch card that could give you out of 5 cash [prizes]: $10, $20, $30, $90, $300 and $2,000."
"Initially I was hesitant as I've done this on other banks before and only got a measly 5 dollars but he spammed me and persuaded me," they add. "I got insanely lucky and got a scratch card worth $2,000."

While the person writes that they were "happy and ecstatic about the money" and wanted to put it into a savings account, their friend had another idea.
"When I told my friend about it he was happy for me but a few hours later he wanted half of my money," the post continues. "I said no way since he did receive some money through referring me."

After some "back and fourth," the person said they would give the friend $200, "as a courtesy," but "he rejected it and said it wasn't enough."
"He insisted without him I wouldn't even get anything," they continue. "I told him either take the $200 or get $0 and he start calling me slurs. Now I feel bad and just want some opinions about it."

Other Reddit users are weighing in on the situation, with one writing, "Here is the lesson - if you win money, don't tell people about it. When you win money, other people may feel they are just as entitled to it as you are, and will ask for a share. You never know who that will be - sometimes its the people you least expect it to be."
Adds another: "A friend should be happy for you, not look at you as a meal ticket. Get a new friend."
