Love Island's Jack Fincham opens up on turning his life around after drug battles

Former Love Island star Jack Fincham is donning his boxing gloves for a big return to the ring tonight in Dubai, after unprecedented flooding shook the city. But there's one thing he's firmly leaving in his past - and that's his previous struggles with drugs.

The 27 year old rose to fame in season four of the hit reality dating show, but since then he has struggled with a drug battle, something he has openly spoke about. But now, in an exclusive interview with OK!, Jack - who is now eight months sober - has vowed that he is turning his life around.

Leaving drugs behind, the star - who has been linked to Love Island co-star Dani Dyer and more recently, TOWIE personality Chloe Brockett - is now focussing on a professional career in boxing. Here, Jack lifts the lid on his dark past, mental health struggles and how getting on the straight and narrow through his boxing has turned his life around and got him out of self-destruct mode.

Hi Jack. You’ve been very open about your past drug-taking and mental health struggles - is it important as a celebrity with a platform to be open about these things do you think?

Yeah, I mean it’s all a part of someone’s story, isn’t it? If you speak out about it and you end up helping one person, then you’ve done your job. I’ve talked about my past loads - but now I’m just proud of where I am and where I’m going.

You have a big boxing match tonight in Dubai - is boxing something you’d like to make a career out of?

Definitely - it’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little boy. I’ve been boxing since I was 13. Me and my brother would box together - I remember us staying up late to watch Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton. It’s something I know I’m good at - so I’m going to give it a good go, now. I just love it.

Who do you look up to - anyone you’d really like to spar with?

I’ll always say Tyson Fury because I love the message he gives out. But I admire anyone that gets into a boxing ring - at any level. It’s a lonely sport, but it’s very rewarding.

You’re not the only former Love islander to go into boxing - has anyone offered tips?

A lot of people don’t realise how long I’ve been doing this! I’ve seen a lot of people go into it, and they’ve messaged me and I’ve offered them advice! I love it though, it brings more eyes on my favourite sport.

Do you stay in touch with any of your fellow Love Islanders?

Yeah, I talk to Sam Bird most days. But yeah, intermittently we all talk. But we’re all from different parts of the country, so it’s hard to physically meet up but I do speak to a lot of them.

You’ve said boxing has turned your life around - tell us more…

I’m just proud of myself - of where I am now, and where I’m going - the shape I’ve got myself into. I’m a shadow of my former self, and I mean that literally, I’m half of my former self!

How important is physical exercise when you’re struggling mentally?

It’s the best - when you’ve had a little workout, you instantly feel better. It’s the best feeling. And that’s Tyson Fury’s message - that’s what I love. I’ve also started doing cold plunges - they’re really good. All I do now is train, eat healthily and work on myself - and keep going upwards.

What else is on the horizon?

More fights! I think there’ll be one at some point in London in June, then back here towards the end of the year - there’s even talk of one in Singapore. And I can travel to all these amazing places - I want business class, next time! I’m joking…

Boxing can be a dangerous sport - are your family worried?

Of course, they don’t like that side of it but they’re so proud. My mum only used to come to some of my fights as a kid - and my stepdad took me all over the country to watch matches, so he comes to all of my fights. I used to cry when my little brother would box - and vice versa! It’s great to chat to him about boxing as he knows the lingo and the world I’m talking about.

Any future telly ambitions, or are you sticking to boxing?

I have, actually - I recently joined an acting agency, and I had an audition last week for a pretty big show and have more coming up. I’ve got something coming out, a little cameo for something on Channel 5 I did the other day, so things are happening. I do really want to get into acting. I mean look, I could be the next Leonardo Di Caprio - the English version!
