Is sea moss good for skin? A derm reveals all Instagram

Celebrity beauty routines are what we beauty journalists get a kick out of (second to trialling new product launches, obvs) and today, my sleuthing has brought me to Love Island All Stars' runner-up, Grace Jackson and her best-kept skincare secret.

While many may look to retinol, niacinamide or hyaluronic acid for a texture-free, glowy complexion, Grace's go-to is a little more organic...

In a recent YouTube video named 'What I eat in a day!', Grace reveals the product helps with her skin health is Mylas Moss, an organic sea moss gel. "I rave about this to everybody! I tell everybody about this," Grace says.

Continuing, she says: "This is not sponsored, it's not an ad. It is just something that has completely transformed my gut health, my skin, my overall health, my immune system - just everything about it I love!"

But can incorporating a superfood like sea moss into your daily routine help transform your skin, too? Cosmopolitan UK consulted dermatologist Dr Nora, cosmetic and medical dermatology doctor, to get the lowdown.

What is sea moss?

"Sea moss, scientifically Chondrus crispus is a type of red algae packed with essential nutrients," Dr Nora tells me. "It has been used in skincare, wellness, and nutrition due to its high mineral content, including iodine, magnesium, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and E."

Sea moss gel can be applied either directly to the face and rinsed off after 20 minutes (like a mask) or consumed – the recommended daily dose is one to two tablespoons. Dr Nora recommends adding it to smoothies, teas, or soups as it can be an acquired taste.

It can also be taken as a capsule or powder.

What are the beauty benefits of sea moss?

In terms of beauty, Dr Nora says there are three main benefits. The first? Like Grace says: bettered skin health. "Sea moss is rich in antioxidants, which help combat free radical damage, potentially reducing signs of ageing," Dr Nora explains. "It contains sulfur, known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin. Its natural hydrating qualities also support a healthy skin barrier."

The second beauty benefit is hair growth and scalp health. "The iodine and minerals in sea moss help nourish the scalp, promoting stronger, shinier hair. Its antimicrobial properties can assist with scalp conditions like dandruff or irritation," says Dr Nora.

And the final benefit: strengthened nails. "With its high mineral content, including calcium and iron, sea moss may support stronger, healthier nails by improving keratin production," Dr Nora says.
