We often look to our favourite celebrities for new season fashion inspiration, but A-list style doesn't always feel practical enough for everyday life (not to mention affordable enough!). So, when actress Katie Holmes stepped out recently in a classic spring outfit that looked a) totally wearable and b) easy to copy on the high street, we sat up and took notes.

The Dawson's Creek star was snapped strolling about New York City last week wearing hero pieces from our transitional capsule wardrobe: black loafers, blue straight-leg jeans, a blue and white striped shirt and a trench coat.

Katie's choice of outerwear in particular put hearts in our eyes – that perfect tone of mustard, with a chic minimalist design that we can't see dating anytime soon. Note her accessories too – tortoiseshell cat-eye sunglasses and a black leather tote bag. So timelessly stylish.

Katie has been nailing spring fashion this year, dipping her toe into the latest trends in a departure from her go-to style formula. She set WhatsApp groups ablaze by mastering double denim, putting a '70s spin on the look by matching Banana Republic flared jeans with a button-down waistcoat in the same dark wash. Dark brown loafers completed her look.

Speaking to Harper's Bazaar in 2022, Katie described her style as 'pretty simple', explaining that her favourite pieces are her vintage T-shirts – 'a little dirty, a little stained or whatever, and that's me'.

'We live in a world where we have a premiere and you want to look nice, and it turns into being a fashion person, and I'm like, 'Well, I just like to look nice, I'm not really a fashion person'. We all just want to look good'.

Ironically, we reckon that Katie's down-to-earth approach is what explains her status as a style icon. Her wardrobe feels accessible – albeit it more expensive than most of us can afford! – and she champions the Red ethos of buying less but better, investing in classic pieces and loving them forever.

Let's not forget, either, that Katie is the woman who flung the humble cardigan back into the fashion spotlight in 2019, when she sent NY brand Khaite's two-piece 'bra-digan' viral. Knitted bras may not have stuck, but the fashion set having been loving the cardi ever since.

Katie's response? 'It looked way more glamorous than it was'. We love a relatable queen.
