Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy is starring in Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie Oppenheimer — and fans have been treated to a new look at the actor in the epic project.

Total Film Magazine posted a collection of brand new images from the movie as a preview for their upcoming 2023 cover story. The first depicts Murphy as a distraught-looking J Robert Oppenheimer, the American scientist known for his creation of the atomic bomb.

In the image, Emily Blunt, who plays Oppenheimer's wife Katherine, clasps Murphy's face. There's also an image of Murphy climbing a structure as well as sitting at a table at some kind of hearing or trial.

In that image, Murphy is surrounded by men, one of whom is Robert Downey Jr, who plays Lewis Strauss — another major figure in the development of the atomic bomb. Another image shows fans a full view of Downey Jr's character.

There are also two behind-the-scenes images showing director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema on set. One is in a crowded room with people cheering Oppenheimer, while the other sees Nolan giving direction in a desert-like landscape.

The movie releases on July 21, 2023, and depicts the life of theoretical physicist Oppenheimer, who was the manager of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project. His efforts led to the creation of the atomic bomb, something he later felt conflicted about.

The movie features an all-star cast with Murphy, Blunt, and Downey Jr joined by Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Peck, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh, and Jack Quaid, among others.

Earlier this year, Murphy spoke about joining the movie as the lead after previously working with Nolan as a supporting player in Batman Begins, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk.

"It's the first time he's cast me in a lead, which I'm still a bit in shock about, but I'm thrilled," Murphy said.

"It's a huge part and a lot of work. But in my estimation, you're working with one of the greatest living directors, so you're in safe hands."

Oppenheimer, based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer, is set for release on July 21, 2023.
