Andrew Haigh has brought together three of UK's most buzzworthy actors together to tell the unsettling story of Strangers.

The film, an adaptation of the award-winning 1987 novel of the same name by Taichi Yamada, has lined up The Crown's Claire Foy, Sherlock's Andrew Scott and Normal People's Paul Mescal, alongside Rocketman's Jamie Bell.

Haigh will be adapting and directing the 2004 translated version of the book that follows screenwriter Adam (Scott) whose life is shaken after a run-in with his mysterious neighbour Harry (Mescal) in his near-empty tower block in London.

As their friendship grows, Adam is suddenly thrust back into a reality where his dead parents (Foy and Bell) are both actually alive, according to Variety. Not only that, but they're still living in his childhood home and the exact same age they were the day they died – over three decades ago.

Haigh's most notable work is the Oscar-nominated 45 Years starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, the festival favourite LGBTQ+ feature, Weekend, and A24’s Lean on Pete.

Scott rose to fame through his role as Jim Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock and recently became internet's darling playing the priest on the final season of Fleabag. He's also now due to appear in the Prime Video thriller series Ripley.

As for Mescal, he became a householand name thanks to Hulu’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People. He also went on to act on Maggie Gyllenhaal’s critically-acclaimed The Lost Daughter alongside Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson.

Foy is probably best known for playing a young Queen Elizabeth in the first two seasons of Netflix's The Crown, which is now entering its sixth and final season.

Executive producer Suzanne Mackie confirmed the decision to not take the period drama further than the late 1990s. "[Showrunner Peter Morgan] has said it very articulately, that he simply can't write something unless there has been time to gain a proper perspective," she told Broadcast in July 2021.
