Original, 8/23/2018: After a year of continuous financial struggle, Sears and Kmart are closing 46 more stores across the U.S.,CNN Money reports. The recent closures come after Sears and Kmart shut down nearly 400 stores in the past year.
According to CNN, the breakdown of store closures will consist of 13 Kmart stores and 33 Sears stores. Employees at those locations were notified that the stores will be completely closed by November. Liquidation sales, in which all of the stores' items will be sold to customers at a discounted price, are set to begin on August 30.
"We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which is a critical component to our integrated retail transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed," Sears Holdings said in a statement to CNN Money. About 900 U.S. stores still remain open.
CEO Eddie Lampert has decided to decrease the real estate footprint due to the increase of online shopping. CNBC reports that over the past 12 months, Sears shares fell more than 85% and the stock hit an all-time low earlier this week.
