Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes has been cast in the upcoming Orphan Black spin-off series, Orphan Black: Echoes.

Taking place a few years after the original series ended in 2017, Echoes is set to explore the "scientific manipulation of human existence" through the entangled lives of a group of women who find themselves suddenly thrust into each others' lives.

Hawes has been cast as the co-lead opposite Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter, who was announced last month.

The Line of Duty actress will portray a perceptive but sensitive scientist who finds herself at odds with her own moral code when circumstances lead her to make an unthinkable choice.

Ritter will play Lucy, "a woman with an unimaginable origin story, trying to find her place in the world".

Anna Fishko (Pieces of Her) will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner on the first series.

John Fawcett is also returning to the franchise to executive produce and direct.

"Embarking on a new saga of Orphan Black with Anna, our partners at Boat Rocker, and AMC could not be more exciting," Fawcett said in a statement in April.

"For all our dedicated OB fans out there, I am thrilled that we can bring this new chapter to them. Without our fans, this new show certainly wouldn't exist and for that, I am deeply grateful. I can't wait to 'follow the crazy science' for them!"

Tatiana Maslany led the original Orphan Black series from 2013-2017 and played numerous cloned characters. However, it remains unknown whether the She-Hulk star will reprise any of her roles in the spinoff.

Meanwhile, Keeley, 46, recently confessed that she could be set to retire from acting in the near future.

She teased that there may be "other avenues" for her to explore before she turns 50.

"I love it, I've been really lucky but over the past couple of years, like lots of people, you think, 'God, life is short and you're only here once' – if you believe that, which I do – and there might be other avenues to explore," she told the Daily Mail.

"I'll be 50 in a minute. There might be other things out there for me."

Orphan Black: Echoes will premiere in 2023 on AMC.
