Lily-Rose Depp shares her homemade remedy for thicker, shinier hair
Homemade hair remedies that proclaim a lustrous shine and longer growth have recently become a popular talking point across social-media platforms, and now Lily-Rose Depp has shared her very own secret for achieving her glossy golden style.
In an exclusive video interview with Bazaar, our February cover star opened up about her hair journey, revealing that she'd suffered with a lot of damage due to years of bleaching. "I had to go on a real hair journey to get the length of it back and the texture and everything," she tells us.
Paying extra attention to the roots of her hair has been a game-changer, the Nosferatu actress explained, "it really all starts at the scalp," and there's one product in particular that she waxes lyrical about: homemade rosemary water.
For someone who has access to the industry's most sought-after hair products, it might be surprising to hear that her secret for healthy hair is something she concocts herself, but it's a method that she's stayed loyal to. "I make homemade rosemary water and put it on my scalp," she explains. "It really does work."
The benefits of rosemary water
In terms of what this apparent wonder tonic can deliver, certified trichologist Rachel Valentine explains that "rosemary water is thought to work due to its anti-oxidant properties, and it's also believed to moisturise the hair and scalp". However, she notes that its benefits are largely anecdotal.
Depp says she's also found benefits from applying oil to her scalp and massaging it, and she's not alone. One study found that regularly invigorating the scalp through massage helps to stimulate the hair follicles and therefore encourages growth and thickness.
Hair experts, however, suggest buying rosemary hair and scalp products from trusted brands rather than making them yourself. "I would recommend getting a pre-made rosemary oil treatment; one of the downsides to DIY remedies is that they're not always consistent with the measurements each time," explains Valentine.
"When using essential oils especially, it's important that you dilute with enough water or this can be irritating to the scalp. Allergies are also quite common with essential oils so you should always skin test first."
How to make rosemary water
If you're leaning towards trying out a homemade recipe, the process is relatively simple. Pour five cups of water into a pan and add one sprig of rosemary for every cup. Let the mixture boil for 15 minutes before letting it sit for 25 minutes — note that many recipes differ on how long to let the rosemary infuse for, with some recommending to let it simmer for up to an hour, so see what works best for you. Finally, strain the liquid into a bottle and use it whenever you require.
Thankfully, if you aren't willing to cook up a batch of your own rosemary water at home, there are a whole host of rosemary-infused scalp products for strengthening and restoring shine to hair, which you can shop below.
