Everything to know about Leos, from traits to romantic compatibility
Being a Leo comes with some serious power and responsibility—after all, you’re the king of the forest the zodiac, and that’s kinda-totally a BFD.
And yeah, your Sun sign doesn’t dictate everything about your personality, astrologically-speaking—you've got to consider your natal and progressed charts, your Moon sign, and your Saturn return, too. Buuuut it still has a lot to do with what makes up the ~essence~ of you, especially during Leo season (July 23 to August 22). You’re a Leo always and forever, obvs, but your Leo personality traits will be super apparent during this time.
Leo Sign Dates
Leos are born between July 23 and August 22, putting Leo season smack-dab between Cancer and Virgo.
Leo Sign Personality Traits
Given that you’ve been a Leo your whole life, you probably have a decent idea of what it means to be a roaring member of the Lion Squad. But there are some basics you might have missed along the way that can help you get a deeper, better understanding of why you are the way you are.
These are the five major character traits all Leo have in common—and should know about themselves—according to Donna Page, a certified astrologer in Atlanta.
1. You’re proud of what you’ve accomplished.
And fair. You’ve worked hard to get where you are today. Like a lion cruising through the savannah, you have zero issue strutting your stuff, whether it’s down the block, through the grocery store aisles, or in a club.
2. You have a generous heart.
You’re super kind. Like, you’d do anything to make people in your circle smile. A friend mentions offhand that she wants to learn how to do a sock bun? You already Amazon Primed her one to try. Ditto for being an all-star cheerleader. Your friends know they can count on you to push them (in a totally supportive way) to be the best version of themselves possible.
3. You can get hurt easily.
You might be a big, powerful catwoman on the outside, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have feelings. If you don’t get a 'you’re so amazing!!!' text after a first date, you can spend some solid time stressing over what that means. And, of course, you’re too proud to reach out and ask if something is up.
4. You’re always down to celebrate.
Whether it’s the anniversary of the first time you and your S.O. split a pint of ice cream or the news that Love Island has a confirmed new series date, people know they can count on you to mark the moment in style. I mean, why not pop a bottle of champers on a Tuesday if you've got a reason, amirite?
Need another reason to celebrate? How 'bout having these Leo celebrities in your squad:
5. You speak your mind.
On the work front, you don’t really get all that advice to speak up in meetings—you’ve always just given your opinion on things. And, in your social life, you are so not here for people stealing your thunder.
You’re a leader, whether it’s getting the party started or tackling a big work project and—life advice for everyone else here—things will go a lot more smoothly for them once they recognise that.
Leo in the workplace
Leos love some friendly competition, especially when it comes to their job—whether it’s in a traditional corporate environment, as a freelancer in a creative field, or as a well-known influencer.
'They are very competitive and they like to climb the corporate ladder,' Stardust says. 'But they are people who won't forget those who helped them along the way. So, they'll always pay them back later on.' Leos love to be the center of attention, while also uplifting others, which makes them natural leaders and managers. Trust a Leo to make sure you look good, because that makes them look good, too—it’s a win-win in their book.
Leo In relationships
Leos in relationships—whether those are best friendships or romantic partnerships—are great listeners, which makes them fantastic partners. (Even if they can err on the side of competitiveness.)
When it comes to the types of friendships they’ll gravitate towards, it can depend on the person. 'Sometimes, a Leo either likes to be surrounded by friends who are better than them, so they can learn from them, or [they] really like to be the leader of the pack,' Stardust says. They also have high standards and expectations for their relationships, because they have high standards for themselves.
Leos are most compatible with air signs and their fellow fire signs—especially Aquarius, their opposite in the Zodiac wheel. 'Aquarius and Leo often do find each other, even though they're opposites, just because Aquarius is okay with sacrificing their ego to let their Leo partner shine,' Stardust explains. Other air signs (a.k.a, flirty Libra and chaotic Gemini) can be a great fit, too.
As a fire sign, of course, Leo isn’t immune to a good Aries or Sagittarius, either—as long as things don’t get too competitive with Aries, or they don’t get spooked by Sag’s flightiness.
Leo modality category
There are three modalities in the zodiac: cardinal (change makers), mutable (transitioners), and in the case of Leo, fixed. Fixed signs don’t need a descriptor because they are exactly how they sound–fixed.
Leo natural element sign
If you guessed that Leo was a fire sign, then you’d be correct. The Lion is bold, and as their ruling planet is the Sun, then you better believe they like all the attention to be on them.
Fire signs—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius—are driven by their passions and always ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.
Leo in the bedroom
Leos love to be pleased, and nothing is more pleasurable to them than being taken care of. In the bedroom, nothing gets Leo hotter than some super-attentive acts of service, especially if they come as a surprise.
What else is important for a Leo in the bedroom? The ambiance. The vibe. 'They want you to find them a hotel room and wear lingerie, to treat them to champagne and strawberries,' Stardust explains. 'That’s what they need.' So, the stars’ advice to you, Leo? Look for someone who wants to take care of you in that way, and loves you for your fierce, generous, confident spirit.
