Legendary kids’ TV show returning to screens with new version decades after it first aired
Over 55 years on since viewers were first introduced to Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang, fans of the iconic animated series are in for a treat as the series is set to receive a brand new 21st Century update thanks to streaming giant Netflix.
The mystery-solving canine has been delighting children and adults alike for over half a century, with his rag tag bunch of friends Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma helping him uncover some of the most dastardly schemes and countless ghouls out there.
In the course of the franchise’s run, Scooby Doo has seen 14 animated series, 45 films, 20 video games and even 6 plays, yet still shows no signs of slowing down or losing it’s trademark appeal to global audiences. Netflix is now reportedly in talks to reboot the series as they look to commission a live-action TV show based on the original animated series
So far, Scooby Doo has seen two live action film adaptations hit the silver screen, but up until now, no live-action series had been considered. Yet this all looks set to change as bosses from the streaming service are currently reviewing a potential script to get the show into production.
At the time of writing, no deal has yet been confirmed but according to Deadline, Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series is nearing a deal at the streamer with a script-to-series commitment.
Although most details surrounding the project remain a closely guarded secret, we do know that if the series goes ahead it will be written by Josh Appelbaum, the brains behind the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and Scott Rosenberg who has famously written Con Air, High Fidelity, Gone in 60 Seconds and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to name but a few.
The duo will also continue on as executive producers on the show, alongside André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman.
Although the plot has yet to be officially disclosed, if the series is green-lit, many fans predict it will follow the same story arcs as the original animated series.
The latest project would unseat Scooby Doo spin-off Velma, from it’s place as the most recent iteration of the franchise to hit our screens, with the animated series recently having begun airing it’s second season on Max.
The critically acclaimed series, which features Mindy Kaling as the no-nonsense amateur detective, first aired in 2023 and canonically made Velma a member of the LGBTQ+ community after years of speculation surrounding the character’s sexuality
The second series of the show began airing earlier this month, on US streaming service Max.
