LectroFan Evo review: Tested and rated by a mum of two
I’m Lucy, a mum of two and a parenting content writer. Like many parents, I’ve experienced my fair share of sleep deprivation — from bubs having night feeds and kiddos having night terrors to tweens struggling to switch off before bed.
Over the last few months, I’ve been testing some of the best white noise machines for babies to see how they support my and my family’s sleep. One option for bubs was Sound of Sleep’s LectroFan Evo — and when I discovered it was also aimed at adults, I couldn’t wait to try it for myself.
The LectroFan Evo is revered for its high-quality digital audio and accurate volume adjustment, but could it really help provide that elusive good night’s sleep? Read on for my full LectroFan Evo review.
EVO Guaranteed Non-Looping Sleep Sound Machine
LectroFan Evo: The Women’s Health verdict
Created alongside Stanford sleep scientists, the LectroFan Evo proved to be a versatile white noise machine suitable for my whole family.
With precise volume adjustment and 22 high-quality sounds, it can run continuously or with a timer for up to eight hours. I loved the range of white noise frequencies, and the calming ocean and surf sounds were a popular choice for my eight-year-old. Thanks to the 3.5mm headphone jack, I was even able to choose some more personal relaxation before bed.
There’s no doubting the impressive audio quality of this white noise machine, but for the price, I’d have loved to have seen a nightlight or a way to navigate through the settings in a dark room.
How I tested the LectroFan Evo White Noise Generator
Since the LectroFan Evo is a white noise generator aimed at all ages, I tested it for three weeks with myself and my family — including my eight-year-old daughter Neve, who often struggles to switch off at night.
After testing the LectroFan Evo in my daughter’s bedtime routine, I kept it on my bedside table, turning it on if I woke up in the night. I also used the 3.5mm headphone jack, assessing whether white noise could aid my focus and concentration when working from home.
In all testing scenarios, I evaluated:
Overall design
Given the LectroFan Evo is aimed at adults and children, I evaluated its overall design and appearance. Does it balance a modern look for adults with a design that feels comfortable in a child’s space? I also considered the white noise machine’s size and power source.
Ease of use and operation
No one wants to fiddle with complicated buttons or cords while trying to wind down and catch some much-needed Zs. White noise machines should be simple to use, with clear instructions and straightforward settings.
I evaluated the LectroFan Evo's setup and ease of use, including the instructions, navigation and built-in timer. Could I easily switch between white noise and fan sounds, adjust the volume and set a timer without hassle?
I also noted whether the absence of a nightlight or backlit buttons made it harder to operate in the dark.
Range of sounds
When choosing a white noise machine, it's important to consider the variety and quality of sounds. Babies and children may prefer the slightly softer frequencies of pink noise, whereas teens and adults may prefer white noise that can drown out background noise or enhance their concentration.
While exploring the LectroFan Evo’s range of white noise and fan sounds, I assessed the overall audio quality and looked for any obvious loops or repeats.
Key features of the LectroFan Evo
Here are some features of the LectroFan Evo that I loved:
Broad range of sounds
The LectroFan Evo includes an impressive 22 sounds — all created digitally without moving parts. It has ten white noise options, varying in pitch from brown to pink, plus two natural sounds (surf and ocean) that are new additions from the previous model. You can also choose from ten fan sounds, ranging from deep industrial hums to mellow oscillating tones.
Timer
By default, the LectroFan Evo runs until you turn it off, which is helpful for children who wake up regularly during the night. If you prefer it to turn off automatically, you can set the timer to run in one-hour intervals up to a maximum of eight hours.
Headphone jack
If you struggle to sleep over your partner's snoring (I can relate!) or simply fancy an early night, the 3.5mm jack is an excellent touch, allowing you to listen through headphones or attach to pillow speakers.
Precise volume control
Unlike some white noise machines with limited volume adjustment or just quiet and loud modes, the LectroFan Evo offers a wide range with precise 1dB adjustments. Sound of Sleep claims it’s ten times quieter at low levels and ten times louder at high levels than competing fan-based machines.
LectroFan Evo review
Overall design
With a slightly futuristic-looking unit measuring around 12cm wide, the LectroFan Evo is fairly large. However, it sat neatly on my bedside table. Thoughtful details like nonstick feet and a groove for tidy cable storage show careful consideration in its design.
The LectroFan Evo requires a power source (or PC) to operate. Unlike most white noise machines that only include a USB cable, this one comes with an AC power adapter — which I was so pleased to see. I love that the cable is extra-long, too. It made it easy to find the best positioning in various rooms in my home.
Another bonus? The LectroFan Evo includes multiple attachments, including European, US and UK plugs — handy for travel!
The 3.5mm headphone jack is a useful touch, allowing you to play white noise through headphones or connect to pillow speakers. As someone who often goes to sleep after my partner, I thought it worked well — drowning out the rumbling freight train of his snoring.
Ease of use and operation
Thanks to a clear user manual and detailed illustrations, I found it easy to set up and start using the LectroFan Evo.
The central control panel is straightforward: white noise sounds are on the left, fan noises are on the right and volume adjustment buttons are in between.
As mentioned, you can adjust the volume in precise 1dB increments. The quietest volume is like a whisper, while the loudest setting effectively masks noisy neighbours and other disruptive sounds.
One minor drawback is that the sounds start automatically when the device is plugged in, which could be frustrating. I was thankful this could be disabled in the settings.
By default, the sounds run continuously, but you can set a timer for automatic shutoff. That said, I found the timer slightly challenging to use. Each button press adds an hour, but with no visual display — just an audio tone indicating when you've reached the end of the options — it was hard to track how long I’d set it for. A few times, I lost count, having to cancel the timer and start the process again.
Additionally, there are no nightlights on the LectroFan Evo. So, compared to some white noise machines, it’s less suitable for supporting nighttime feeds and nappy changes. I’d have loved a dim nightlight or slightly backlit buttons to make it easier to operate in the dark.
Range of sounds
I was impressed by the LectroFan Evo’s range of high-quality digital sounds. The extensive volume range meant it was easy to adapt to my surroundings. I also appreciated that the sounds play smoothly, without noticeable loops or repetition — helpful for quieting my racing mind before bed.
There are ten noise frequencies, from low-density brown noise to higher-frequency pink and white noise. Some sounded a bit harsh, so I preferred the softer, more calming surf and ocean sounds. Not only did they help me fall back asleep at night, but they also provided great background noise while working from home.
For those with babies, younger children or noisy neighbours, the ten fan noises are especially handy. From oscillating fans to exhaust fans and attic fans, the sounds create a smooth, steady hum to block out potential distractions.
What other white noise machines could you consider?
While I was impressed with the LectroFan Evo, I missed having a nightlight or backlit buttons. Some other machines I’ve tested tick these boxes.
During testing, I found the Momcosy White Noise Machine a stellar option. With 34 soothing sounds combined with a seven-shade gradient nightlight, it creates a calm and reassuring bedtime environment for users of all ages.
For babies and children, the VTech V-Hush White Noise Machine is an incredibly versatile choice. It blends white noise sounds with stories, music, lights and projections to completely overhaul the bedtime routine.
What’s the difference between white and pink noise?
White noise plays all frequencies evenly, all at the same time. On the other hand, pink noise has more power at lower frequencies, making it sound slightly softer than white noise. Pink noise often includes more natural sounds such as wind, ocean and waterfalls and can be less harsh for babies and young children.
Can a white noise machine help you sleep?
Yes, a white noise machine can play sounds that mask background noise, such as traffic or snoring, to help you fall and stay asleep.
Are there any risks of using a white noise machine?
As long as you use them at appropriate volume levels and position them out of reach of young children, white noise machines are a safe addition to your family’s bedtime routine. However, as with any sleep aid, you should use them in moderation and avoid overreliance.
