The Law of Attraction is all about harnessing main character energy for good

Main Character Energy: If you haven’t read the articles, or seen the memes and TikToks, allow me to bring you up to speed. Embodying this energy means not being afraid to take up space. It’s about wearing that giant faux fur leopard print jacket to grab coffee at Starbucks with your friends simply because you can. It’s acting like a Princess, even when you’re wearing a tracksuit.

Simply put, it’s being the protagonist in your life.

Why is starring in a one-person show important? Because the law of attraction relies on people taking the lead role in their lives, says Juliette Kristine Conner, a manifestation coach. 'The law of attraction is a wonderful tool that makes you the creator of your own reality,' says Conner. 'It moves us from a limited mindset to an empowering one.'

To bring it back down to earth a bit, the law of attraction, or the idea that your thoughts and actions can shape your reality, puts you in the driver's seat of your life. You can move from being a bystander—and often ignoring windows of opportunity—to being the main character. The law of attraction can change your life for the better.

'It helps us realise something important,' says Conner. 'It [means] I get to choose the life I create.' When practiced properly, the law of attraction can help you craft the life you truly want. And what could be more important than that?

Okay, so what exactly is the law of attraction?

The law of attraction is a universal law based on the belief that you can attract or manifest anything into your life by changing your thoughts, words, feelings, and beliefs, explains Conner. Easy enough, right?

If you’ve ever heard your woo-woo friend telling you to protect your energy, or change your vibe with affirmations... this is one of the reasons why. (I would know, I am the witchy friend.) Most of the time, your subconscious runs your life. Some of this is necessary for survival. It’s hard enough to wake up, get dressed, go to work, and make it home every day. Imagine if you were consciously going through every single motion, pondering every minuscule decision throughout your day. You’d never get anything done!

There is real power in your subconscious mind, so when you start to influence it positively, the potential is limitless, says Conner. In fact, one of the main principles of this law is that like energy attracts like energy.

Want to attract the romantic partner of your dreams? Start moving through life as if you'll find them around every corner. Looking for a parking spot? Drive around your city as if you have a private spot on each block.

But, if you’ve spent a night thinking, 'There’s no way I’m going to wake up on time for work tomorrow,' only to crack your eyes open and see you slept through ALL of your alarms... you’ve seen this law working against you. So, how do you flip the script?

Remaining in the present moment—another principle of the law—is also essential here, says Conner. If you get too entrenched in your autopilot way of living and don’t notice what’s right in front of you, you may be missing key opportunities the Universe is throwing your way.

For example, if you've been complaining to friends for years that you haven’t had the perfect meet-cute yet, but spend every subway ride, or moment outside of your house with headphones on blasting Megan thee Stallion while avoiding eye contact with everyone (guilty), then would you even notice if your rom-com co-star was standing right in front of you? Exactly. There is tremendous power in the present if you—all you have to do is harness it.

How do laws of attraction work?

If you’re more of a left side of the brain person, there is a more scientific explanation for this phenomenon. It centres around the reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brain stem that make up a sort of filtering system in your mind, Conner says.

'This system filters out the unnecessary things, so we can receive the important information we need,' explains Conner. 'Otherwise, our brains are just going to be bombarded with every piece of information every moment of the day.'

If you’ve ever thought to yourself 'huh, a Jeep Renegade is a cute car' and then saw them everywhere you went for the next few days or weeks, this is an example of your RAS at work. Your brain highlights the type of car, purse, or shoes you like, and then makes you aware of the patterns around you. The law of attraction capitalizes on this exact same system to help you call things into your life, Conner says, and of course, there’s a little bit of ~magic~.

'We live in a vibrational universe, governed by the law of attraction,' Conner says. 'Whatever energy you are putting out affects what is coming back to you.'

How do you use and practice the law of attraction?

1. Envision the reality you want to create.

The easiest method, and Conner's tool of choice, is making a vision board. But like most things in the spiritual realm, it has to be done with intention.

'I always have my clients get really clear on not only what they want, but why they want it before doing any formal practice,' says Conner. 'Thinking 'I want to lose weight' is not enough. You have to go deeper. This is about what the heart and soul want, not what you think you want, or what others around you want.'

2. Get crystal clear on the specifics driving your desires.

If you're hoping to manifest a trip, for example, Conner recommends doing some self-reflection to zone in on your wish, rather than just slapping a bunch of pretty images on a poster board. Ask yourself: Where do you want to go? Why do you want to go there? For how long? When? With whom?

The more detailed you get, and the more you understand why you desire the things you are trying to manifest, the more real it will become to you and the world around you. So before you bust out the glue sticks and magazines, consider taking a sec to journal on it.

3. Pay attention to your aspirations.

'I like vision boards because they make you focus, they make you feel, and they change your frequency,' Conner says. 'Having a vision board in your home to look at daily anchors you to the future goals you are working toward.' When you’re literally staring down your goal every morning and evening, they tend to materialise.

Embrace the person on that vision board by starting to take (small) steps toward the goals that will get you closer to becoming that person. If your goal is to start your own jewelry line, begin doing research and going to trade shows or craft fairs in your free time. If you want to travel to Spain, consider learning the language. Really plunge into whatever the dream is. Think of it like character acting, except in real life.

One of Conner's greatest manifestation success stories happened in her twenties when she wanted to use the law of attraction to go on a trip to Bali. She created a vision board, including a photo of a person getting a massage at a spa overlooking the ocean in Bali. Less than six months later, her partner (and now-husband) got a job offer in Bali and invited her to come with him. The kicker? His job was at the very same resort that she had used as her inspiration photo months earlier.

Are there any downsides to the law of attraction?

In short, not really. There is some discussion about manifesting negative things, by worrying too much, but Conner doesn’t really buy that. It’s your dominant vibration that helps you manifest, not just passing thoughts.

'Think if you were in a really hot room, and you opened the window a crack,' she said. 'It’s not going to suddenly become freezing.'

As long as you maintain a positive outlook *most of the time* your manifestations will start becoming reality. And that’s not too much to do in exchange for a dream life, now is it?
