It’s no secret that train travel is having a moment. Just as I was recovering from the excitement over the announcement of Belmond’s new UK sleeper train came the news of La Dolce Vita Orient Express, a glossy and elegant train setting off for Italian round trips from spring 2025.

SEE TUSCANY ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

Inspired by 1960s and '70s Italian glamour, the 12 carriages of La Dolce Vita Orient Express will carry only 62 passengers. The accommodation is all ensuite, although I’ll be tempted to upgrade to one of the 18 suites with a master bedroom rather than a sofa bed. Either way, they'll all have sumptuous '60s and '70s patterns in a rich palette of burgundy, ochres, and coppers.

Of course, this being Italy, fabulous food is an essential component. So it was a smart move to enlist the expertise of the three Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck to oversee the onboard menus. Every itinerary will feature a different menu honouring regional specialities, from Sicilian arancini to Venetian tiramisu.

The wine lists will be just as well-considered, of course. And the train's beautifully stylish bar car will be just the place to sip on classic Italian cocktails and wine and share travel stories with other guests. Come evening, a pianist plays, creating an elegant atmosphere as the train moves through the Italian countryside.

Of the eight Italian journeys La Dolce Vita Orient Express will take, the one that catches my eye is the overnight journey from Rome into the Tuscan vineyards to sample one of my favourite Italian reds, the unmistakable Brunello. Having travelled north from Rome, the train stops at Montalcino, a classic Tuscan town, for a tour and wine tasting.

On an exclusive holiday with Country Living, you can take a five-night trip in 2025, spending three nights in Rome and a night aboard this exquisite new train in its debut season. This one is bound to be popular, so add it to your 2025 travel plans now.
