What we know about Netflix's How To Kill Your Family series so far

Easily one of our favourite books of the last few years was undoubtedly Bella Mackie's debut thriller novel How To Kill Your Family (her new book is out in September btw), and now it's being made into a Netflix series.

The exciting news was shared at the Edinburgh TV festival yesterday (21st August), and the series will see Anya Taylor-Joy take on the lead role of Grace, who, after the death of her mother, and the rejection of her father's wealthy family, makes it her mission to exact her revenge and take each family member out.

So what else do you need to know about the series? Well here's all the details we've got so far.

What is How To Kill Your Family about?

How To Kill Your Family will be an eight-part drama series that follows the story of Grace Bernard, who is the result of her mother's affair with billionaire Simon Artemis. After her mother dies and her father rejects her, Grace sets about plotting revenge to kill off every single member of her family.

The official synopsis reads: "Grace has a complicated family. Her dad is Simon Artemis; a billionaire and ruthless social climber. She’s the product of an affair he claims not to remember and Grace and her mum were left to fend for themselves.

"When her mother dies and she’s rejected by the very people who should love her, Grace transforms her anger into something useful: killing off this estranged extended family via morbidly creative means. Grace is clawing her way towards revenge and a hefty inheritance, but her mission only pulls her further away from what it is she really needs.”

When was How To Kill Your Family announced?

During the 2024 Edinburgh TV Festival on 21st August Netflix announced the eight-part series was in development.

The project is a collaboration between Netflix and Sid Gentle Films Ltd, who created Killing Eve, and will see Emma Moran as the series' lead writer.

Who is in the cast for How To Kill Your Family?

Ok, even more exciting news to come, as Anya Taylor-Joy is officially confirmed to be playing the lead role of Grace, and will also be serving as an executive producer on the project.

Anya has touched on her excitement about playing Grace, saying in a statement: "As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be a part of bringing this story to life. After some (light) stalking of the inimitable Bella Mackie, I could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with the team that is Sally, Lizzie and Emma. I am looking forward to getting our hands even dirtier.”

Is How To Kill Your Family based on a book?

Yes! The Netflix series is based on the best-selling 2021 novel of the same name by Bella Mackie.

The novel has since sold over 1.2million copies since release and Bella has shared her excitement for the project's adaptation, saying in a statement: "It’s been thrilling to watch the characters I wrote take on new life under this magnificent creative team. Anya is the most perfect fit to play Grace: I often think she understands her better than I do. Pairing up with Sid Gentle has been joyful, and introducing me to Emma has made me supremely confident the book is in safe hands.”

Ok, we are so excited to watch this new series unfold.
