Eliud Kipchoge has announced he will run the 2023 Berlin Marathon in September – one year on from breaking his own marathon world record on the very same course.

The double Olympic champion, who shaved 30 seconds off his own world record to clock 2:01:09 in the German capital last year, aims to become the first athlete in history to win the race five times.

NN Running, the pro team behind Kipchoge, announced today that he has chosen Berlin for his autumn marathon, due its fast course, making it the 'perfect preparation' for the Olympic marathon in Paris next August.

'On my road to the Paris Olympic Games, I like to go back to the BWM Berlin Marathon, since to me this is the perfect preparation,' Kipchoge said. 'I have great memories there and I look forward to running the streets of Berlin again, together with the thousands of runners that will join.'

The 38-year-old will be racing against Kenyan compatriot Kelvin Kiptum, who became the second-faster marathoner of all time when he won the London Marathon this April in a PB of 2:01:25. Compatriot Amos Kipruto, who won the London Marathon in 2022, will also be on start line.

Although Kipchoge’s most recent race saw him finish sixth in Boston, he has only been defeated once in Berlin, in 2013, when he finished runner-up in only his second marathon.

Kipchoge won the Berlin Marathon in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022. He has also won the London Marathon four times, as well the Chicag0 and Tokyo marathon once apiece, but is yet to race the New York City Marathon.
