King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla Hold Their First Audiences at Buckingham Palace
King Charles III has held his first audiences as U.K. sovereign.
The monarch, accompanied by Queen Consort Camilla, held audiences with several British political and faith leaders in their first royal duties following the king's accession to the throne upon Queen Elizabeth II's death.
Yesterday afternoon, the royal couple held audiences with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Prime Minister Liz Truss and members of the Cabinet, and leaders of the opposition party in the 1844 Room of Buckingham Palace. For the meetings, the monarch wore a classic navy suit with subtle pinstripes, while Queen Camilla wore a black dress and tights.
Today, the monarch continued his audiences, meeting with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth before attending a reception with the Realm High Commissioners and their spouses in the palace's Bow Room. He later met with the Dean of Windsor in a private audience.
The royal couple also took time to greet members of the public outside Buckingham Palace, exiting his car to meet with mourners on both Friday and Saturday. King Charles and Queen Camilla shook hands with dozens of well-wishers and visited floral tributes to the late monarch, per Reuters.
The couple will travel to Edinburgh, Scotland tomorrow morning, where members of the royal family will take part in a Procession of Queen Elizabeth's coffin from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St. Giles' Cathedral. The royals will also attend a service at the cathedral, after which the coffin will lie-at-rest to allow the Scottish public to pay their respects.
Yesterday, during his official proclamation, the new sovereign dedicated himself to the roles of his title.
"I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of Sovereignty which have now passed to me. In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these Islands and of the Commonwealth Realms and Territories throughout the world," he said.
