Last month (9 November), King Charles was hurled with eggs during a royal tour in York. And now, the man who seemingly threw eggs directly at Charles has been charged with ‘threatening behaviour’.

The man behind the incident is 23-year-old Patrick Thelwell, an International Relations student at the University of York, who is well-known locally for his left-wing politics.

To recap on the incident: King Charles and the Queen Consort, Camilla, had just arrived in York to reveal a statue of Queen Elizabeth II at York Minster – designed to celebrate the late Queen's platinum jubilee.

The day held a traditional ceremony where the King himself was officially welcomed to the northern city by the Lord Mayor. The event was last carried out by his mother, the Queen, in 2012.

As the couple were shaking hands and greeting members of the public, Thelwell, who turned up to protest, began to boo at the royals. Shortly after, he began to throw four eggs at the couple – all of which missed.

Charles and Camilla were ushered away by security instantly. And, although the pair didn’t seem too concerned at the unexpected attack, the crowd began to shout "God save the King" and "shame on you" at the protester.

Thelwell was instantly restrained by police and held behind some fencing at Micklegate Bar (a mediaeval gateway). A video of the incident quickly began to circulate on social media, along with photos from the day showing the cracked eggs just yards away from Charles and Camilla.

Speaking at the ceremony, Charles honoured his mother: “The late Queen was always vigilant for the welfare of her people during her life. Now her image will watch over what will become Queen Elizabeth Square for centuries to come.”

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed the charges on Thelwell (20 December), who will appear in York Magistrates’ Court on 20 January 2023.
