Kin star shares disappointing update on future of show as fans desperate for season 3
One of the stars from RTE's gripping crime drama Kin has spilled the beans on the much-anticipated third season, leaving fans on tenterhooks about the fate of the Kinsella clan.
The Dublin-based gangland thriller, featuring a stellar cast including Clare Dunne, Charlie Cox, Aidan Gillen, Ciaran Hinds, and Sam Keeley, has had viewers glued to their screens.
Kin became an instant sensation on RTE, with the second season finale pulling in nearly 600,000 viewers, not to mention its smashing success on the RTE Player. The drama reached new heights of fame when it hit BBC iPlayer this February, quickly becoming one of the top five most-watched programmes during the week of its release.
Despite the show's acclaim and viewer magnetism, whispers have surfaced suggesting Kin might not come back for a third run due to the main cast's contracts concluding.
Sinan Sicimoglu, who portrayed the pawn shop owner where the Kinsellas stashed their cash, revealed to the Irish Sun: "It's the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts in 2020 to appear in Kin, but it's now 2024 and those contract have run out."
Clare Dunne, the star who brings Kinsella matriarch Amanda to life in Kin, has opened up about the prospects of a third season, admitting that she's in the dark about any plans for new episodes.
While gracing the red carpet at the IFTA Awards, where Kin triumphed with the Best Drama accolade, Clare shared: "If it came back again I would be delighted. But if it doesn't then we just have to count our blessings of what we had. Either way it's going to be okay."
Clare also mentioned: "I think we would all go back together if we can get all the stars aligned and get everyone's availability, because we have some big stars involved."
Despite the uncertainty, Clare has dropped hints before that a third season might not be on the cards, pointing out the busy schedules of the cast as a potential hurdle.
Speaking candidly to Goss. ie, she explained: "It depends on what I have on the table by then, because I'm now out of contract," and "Like we're not attached to it anymore so we can do what we want, which is why I think season three is not going to happen."
Clare speculated on the return of co-star Charlie Cox, saying: "I think if they could find a way to get Charlie Cox to do it again, fine, but I just don't know if he can do it because he's doing Daredevil, he's got a lot going on, two small kids living over in America. It's tough on him and Sam to move over here."
She concluded with a touch of uncertainty: "I don't know, look, you just never know with these things. But I just think right now it seems like a no."
Kin, the gripping crime drama, is set to captivate a larger audience as it begins streaming on Netflix in Ireland and the UK next month.
The first season of this Irish crime series will make its grand Netflix debut in Ireland and the UK on May 1. The series was snapped up by the BBC late last year after BRON Studios went bankrupt.
The first season of this eight-part drama delves into the lives of the Kinsellas, a small yet close-knit crime family caught in a war against formidable drug lord, Eamon Cunningham (portrayed by Ciaran Hinds).
When a member of the Kinsella clan meets a tragic end, the family launches into a gangland war with Cunningham's international cartel, a battle they seem destined to lose. Outnumbered, out-financed, and out-gunned - the Kinsellas find themselves barricaded in their Dublin stronghold as their businesses crumble, and family members and associates are targeted.
